Em doses exageradas, inescrupulosas, abusivas, a propaganda faz mal para o público infantil. Deve ser servida com moderação."

Sur son site « Ludum Invaders », Gael Gilson, professeur de français à Liège, propose une intéressante séquence pédagogique intitulée « La photo qui murmurait à l’oreille de l’homme ». Les élèves sont amenés à analyser les caractéristiques du photoreportage dans sa triple dimension : narrative, informative et argumentative. Ils sont au final invités à réaliser leur propre photoreportage : « Sur le chemin de l’école, en faisant un tour en ville, près de chez toi… promène-toi et mets toi dans la peau d’un journaliste. Avec ton appareil photo, ton téléphone… prends en photo une scène qui te choque, te bouleverse, t’interpelle. Une scène que tu aurais envie de montrer au grand public pour dénoncer une des facettes de la laideur du monde. » La photo doit être enrichie d’un texte de commentaire, d’une interview, d’un compte rendu personnel et d’un « peer-review ».

"Drawing on the thought of Max Weber, in particular his theory of stratification, this book engages with the question of whether the digital divide simply extends traditional forms of inequality, or whether it also includes new forms of social exclusion, or perhaps manifests counter-trends that alleviate traditional inequalities whilst constituting new modalities of inequality. With attention to the manner in which social stratification in the digital age is reproduced and transformed online, the author develops an account of stratification as it exists in the digital sphere, advancing the position that, just as in the social sphere, inequalities in the online world go beyond the economic elements of inequality. As such, study of the digital divide should focus not simply on class dynamics or economic matters, but cultural aspects - such as status or prestige - and political aspects - such as group affiliations. Demonstrating the enduring relevance of Weber’s distinctions with regard to social inequality, The Third Digital Divide: A Weberian approach to rethinking digital inequalities explores the ways in which online activities and digital skills vary according to crucial sociological dimensions, explaining these in concrete terms in relation to the dynamics of social class, social status and power. As such, it will be of interest to social scientists with interests in sociological theory, the sociology of science and technology, and inequality and the digital divide."

And yet, empathy also happens to be one of the most difficult skills to teach, rife as it is with complexity and emotion.

In this country, Elizabeth Thoman, CHM, founded Media and Values magazine in 1977 to explore the influence of media on family life, education and citizenship in a democratic society.  In 1989, when the audience for Media and Values had grown substantially, Thoman founded the Center for Media Literacy to publish curriculum and develop models for teacher training.

Perhaps the term is too vaguely defined to warrant recognition and too dull to elicit enthusiasm. For me, though, media literacy holds all the promise that literacy initiatives offered a hundred years ago: specifically, some measure of equality, or of equal participation at least, in the larger discussion being held in society – the conversation we have with ourselves through the stories we tell about who we are."

“Democracy demands media literacy, and this particular moment in time demands a serious investment by newsrooms and by tech giants like Facebook and Google and investment in news literacy,” said CNN’s Brian Stelter.

His comment was partly in reaction to the accumulation of invective by President Donald Trump who called the media the enemy of the American people and purveyor of fake news.

It was music to my ears hearing Stelter utter those words on his show “Reliable Sources” a week after I’d spoken on the need for media and information literacy at a United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) conference in New York.

Accelerating Public Engagement - report

"More than ever before public engagement is central to the work of governments on local, state and national levels. Moving beyond outreach practices, which generally involve activities that broadcast to communities what governments do and deflect what they don’t do, public engagement is a two-way process that entails ongoing interaction and listening to generate mutual benefit. Establishing a fluid and open-ended dialogue across the boundary between a government and its communities can lead to better-informed policies that effectively communicate messages, solve problems and deliver services in new, creative and impactful ways. Yet, despite enthusiasm for public engagement, there is no well-supported formula for how to do it effectively. What is clear is that engagement should incorporate today’s dynamic media landscape, cultural norms of responsiveness, and expectations of user friendliness in a context of reciprocity and long term partnership."

Estamos inmersos en la sociedad de los datos. Cada día producimos y consumimos una gran cantidad de datos y las estimaciones sobre el volumen de datos que produciremos en el 2020 hablan de 40 zettabyte, o más de 5 terabytes por persona. Parece una locura pero como Internet en su momento, los datos están aquí para quedarse. La cultura de los datos es imparable.

 

Palabras “big data” o grandes volúmenes de datos están de moda en el sector empresarial por los beneficios de la toma de decisiones de negocio basadas en los datos. Por otro lado, la conciencia sobre los datos personales cobra cada día más importancia gracias a revelaciones como las que hizo Edward Snowden sobre impacto de los metadatos de nuestra actividad en la red. Finalmente el tercer gran actor de los datos son los llamados datos abiertos, que de forma inicial activan  y distribuyen las instituciones públicas obligadas por la ley de transparencia.

"Este relatório apresenta os resultados da 3.ª edição do projeto da Entidade Reguladora para a Comunicação Social «Públicos e Consumos de Media», desenvolvida em parceria com a Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Esta edição tem como tema principal de análise os usos de meios eletrónicos por crianças (3-8 anos). Procurou-se identificar os ambientes de ecrãs (televisão, computadores, consolas, telemóveis, tablets ...) em que vi-vem as crianças destas idades, os seus modos de acesso e usos, como os pais orientam esses usos e as suas atitudes e preocupações. O estudo incluiu duas componentes: 1.o primeiro inquérito nacional sobre este tema, realizado face a face em 656 lares, que reuniu um questionário para pais de crianças de 3 a 8 anos, e um questionário para crianças de 6-8 anos; 2. entrevistas e observação em lares de 20 famílias com perfis diferentes e com crianças dos 3-8 anos que fos-sem utilizadoras da internet."

No final do mês de Fevereiro, a Hemeroteca rende-se ao mediatismo da cerimónia de entrega dos Óscares e procura na sua coleção títulos que revisitem o mundo da 7.ª arte. Este ano, propomos nova incursão nos anos 20 e 30 do século XX, com 3 títulos que vêm enriquecer a nossa secção cinematográfica de jornais e revistas digitalizados.

Ao Cine-Jornal : grande semanário cinematográfico, editado em Lisboa por Fernando Fragoso entre 1935 e 1939 (e do qual disponibilizamos o primeiro ano de publicação), juntamos a Invicta Cine, editada no Porto, sob responsabilidade de Roberto Lino, entre 1923 e 1936 (existente na nossa coleção desde o número 134, de Agosto de 1931), e alguns números da revista brasileira Cinearte, fundada por Mário Behring e Adhemar Gonzaga e editada no Rio de Janeiro entre 1926 e 1942.

Qu'est-ce que l'éducation aux médias ? Originellement, elle s'est définie par la nécessité de développer dès le plus jeune âge un esprit critique face aux contenus médiatiques. À l'heure du numérique, elle doit aussi développer la créativité des jeunes et leur autonomie pour qu'ils puissent produire des énoncés médiatiques de plus en plus originaux et adaptés à leurs besoins. Ils ne sont pas seuls pour accomplir ce chemin, l'École peut et doit les accompagner. Les pédagogies innovantes apparaissent comme un levier prometteur pour les enseignants, réconciliant éducation par les médias et éducation aux médias. Il s'agit désormais d'un défi mondial, mais auquel les réponses politiques et les usages médiatiques apportés sont fortement contrastés. Cet ouvrage propose une perspective internationale d'expériences et de travaux de recherche qui montre, par la diversité des contributions, la richesse de cette question.
