Published by UNESCO in 2011, this publication has now been identified as a valuable resource to be translated into Portuguese in order to serve as a reference for the integration of media and information literacy (MIL) in teacher education in Brazil. The Portuguese translation has been produced in cooperation with the Federal University of Triangulo Mineiro (UFTM) and will be officially launched at a UFTM seminar in Uberaba. In 2012, UFTM, which offers a Master’s Degree Education Research Programme titled “Teacher Education and Digital Culture”, identified the UNESCO Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Curriculum for Teachers as a key resource to be translated into Portuguese. UFTM financed the translation, printing and distribution of the publication, while UNESCO was in charge of proofreading, editing and design. Both institutions will disseminate the publication among partners, educators, teachers, students, networks and other stakeholders.

"For very young children, talking is teaching. As we’ve written, the language-rich interaction between young children and their caregivers is most important for learning. Writing in the New York Times recently, Tina Rosenberg resurfaced some important research about the stark disparity that exists between the number of words lower income and higher income children hear at home, and the affect this has on IQ and school readiness. With less talk at home, low-income children are getting less teaching."
The Facebook generation is fed up with Facebook. That's according to a report released Tuesday by the Pew Research Center, which surveyed 802 teens between the ages of 12 and 17 last September to produce a 107-page report on their online habits.
"Empirical studies of online debate almost universally observe a “dominant” minority of posters. Informed by theories of deliberative democracy, these are typically framed negatively—yet research into their impact on debate is scant. To address this, a typology of what we call super-participation (super-posters, agenda-setters and facilitators) is developed and applied to the http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/ forum. Focusing on the first of these, we found 2,052 superposters (0.4%) contributing 47% of 25m+ posts. While superposters were quantitatively dominant, qualitative content analysis of the discursive practices of 25 superposters (n=40,044) found that most did not attempt to stop other users from posting (curbing) or attack them (flaming). In fact, in contradiction to the received wisdom, super-posters discursively performed a range of positive roles".

This paper presents cross-national research on news readership diversification. We compare written news (print and free newspapers, online and mobile news services) audiences in the 5 most populous and industrialized European countries (Italy, France, Spain, the UK and Germany). Outlining a sociodemographic portrait of these different news users is important in order to understand the changes undergone inside the world of written news. We draw on a telephone survey carried out in 2009, using a representative population sample (N=7,255). The survey considers sociodemographic variables, including a range of social activities and attitudinal variables, television, computer, and mobile phone ownership, and Internet access and use. Findings show a rich, but volatile relationship between written news, audience behaviors, and community participation.

"This web quest will ask students to read and think critically about some of the media sources they are familiar with. Students will look closely at the purposes of the different kinds of media, look at the techniques used to create the different types of media and their messages. Students will also examine different written conventions for different types of media."

"In May 2012, we hosted a conference at Dublin’s Royal Society of the Antiquaries of Ireland in order to analyse and debate the politics of consumption. This special issue is the outcome of the discussions which took place during that event. It features conceptual and empirical investigations into the politics of consumption, a head-to-head debate on the idea of consumer citizenship, a series of notes on the relationship between art, politics, and consumption, and reviews of two recent books. Taken together, these diverse pieces underline the need for a politically-oriented analysis of consumption, not only for the sake of informing academic debates but also for the sake of informing contemporary consumption practices. Consumption, we argue, is political: to approach it otherwise is to dogmatically seek refuge in a world of fantasy. "

"The May Day Manifesto came out in May 1967, not far short of fifty years ago. It was edited by Stuart Hall, Edward Thompson and Raymond Williams, and appeared with the names of over 70 signatories - writers, academics and activists associated with the New Left. It was republished in an extended form a year later as a Penguin Special, with Raymond Williams as its editor, and sold more than 10,000 copies. Its purpose was to make a comprehensive declaration of opposition to the new capitalism - a ‘managerial’ form of capitalism - which it saw emerging" (Michael Rustin)

" Last September, Dan Gillmor wrote an essay on journalism education that should be read by everyone in higher education. He included this prescription: “Persuade the president (or chancellor, or whatever the title) and trustees of the university that every student on the campus should learn journalism principles and skills before graduating, preferably during freshman year.---”
