Developing Media Literacy by Teaching Citizens the Standards of Journalism

The lifeblood of developing democracies is a well-informed and engaged electorate, which requires a free and vibrant press. However, where journalistic standards are lax, and media often face pressure from government and business, a lack of media literacy hampers a citizen's access to accurate and independent media. Citizens become accustomed to the poor journalistic standards and lose all trust in the fourth estate including any independent media. Just as a more informed electorate demands better governance, Internews Network, an international media development NGO, hypothesized that a more media literate audience demands higher journalistic standards.

Trump and the ‘Society of the Spectacle’

Trump and the ‘Society of the Spectacle’ | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"Nearly 50 years ago, Guy Debord’s “The Society of the Spectacle” reached bookshelves in France. It was a thin book in a plain white cover, with an obscure publisher and an author who shunned interviews, but its impact was immediate and far-reaching, delivering a social critique that helped shape France’s student protests and disruptions of 1968. “The Society of the Spectacle” is still relevant today. With its descriptions of human social life subsumed by technology and images, it is often cited as a prophecy of the dangers of the internet age now upon us. And perhaps more than any other 20th-century philosophical work, it captures the profoundly odd moment we are now living through, under the presidential reign of Donald Trump."

How The World Changed Social Media

How The World Changed Social Media | Educommunication | Scoop.it
"How the World Changed Social Media is the first book in Why We Post, a book series that investigates the findings of anthropologists who each spent 15 months living in communities across the world. This book offers a comparative analysis summarising the results of the research and explores the impact of social media on politics and gender, education and commerce. What is the result of the increased emphasis on visual communication? Are we becoming more individual or more social? Why is public social media so conservative? Why does equality online fail to shift inequality offline? How did memes become the moral police of the internet?"

In the age of robots, our schools are teaching children to be redundant | George Monbiot

In the age of robots, our schools are teaching children to be redundant | George Monbiot | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"A regime of cramming and testing is crushing young people’s instinct to learn and destroying their future".

"In the future, if you want a job, you must be as unlike a machine as possible: creative, critical and socially skilled. So why are children being taught to behave like machines? Children learn best when teaching aligns with their natural exuberance, energy and curiosity. So why are they dragooned into rows and made to sit still while they are stuffed with facts?"

"This work aims to analyze, evaluate and critique The Economist magazine’s cover entitled “The New Nationalism.” It studies the characters presented in the cover and their backgrounds. It also studies the colors, body positions as well as the elements used in the caricature. Furthermore, both the analysis and critique are based on articles and personal knowledge and interpretation. The piece also provides various perspectives to the matter based on the person’s ideology and beliefs and it suggests an alternative headline and image to the story."

Media Literacy is Bigger Than Fake News

Media Literacy is Bigger Than Fake News | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"In a short span of time, our lives have become increasingly dominated by media everywhere we go. Yet when I say media literacy I can almost see people’s eyes glaze over. Perhaps the term is too vaguely defined to warrant recognition and too dull to elicit enthusiasm. For me, though, media literacy holds all the promise that literacy initiatives offered a hundred years ago: specifically, some measure of equality, or of equal participation at least, in the larger discussion being held in society – the conversation we have with ourselves through the stories we tell about who we are."

Media literacy and Japanese American World War II incarceration

Media literacy and Japanese American World War II incarceration | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"Seventy-five years ago, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, authorizing the forced removal of 110,000 Japanese Americans simply because they looked like the enemy. A new war, a surprise attack on American soil, and longstanding prejudice against immigrants who looked and spoke differently created a perfect storm of fear and hysteria. Over 9,000 Japanese Americans in King County were taken from their homes and imprisoned by armed soldiers, but why did so few of their fellow Americans speak out to defend them?"

Fighting fake news: Lancaster's schools and colleges focus on media literacy

Fighting fake news: Lancaster's schools and colleges focus on media literacy | Educommunication | Scoop.it
During the recent presidential campaign, the librarians at Franklin & Marshall College felt a need to talk with students about information literacy.

By the time they held a workshop on the subject last month — in the wake of the Pizzagate episode and the attention on “alternative facts” — they believed it was needed more than ever.

During the workshop, held over a lunch break, students and professors talked about subjects like how to determine a news source is credible and the best way of telling someone they’re sharing fake news.

“It’s really about being an engaged and informed citizen,” says Meghan Kelly, research and emerging technologies librarian at F&M. “Democracy doesn’t function without informed citizens.”

UNESCO launch Five Laws of Media and Information Literacy | Educommunication | Scoop.it
UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) have launched their Five Laws of Media and Information Literacy. Their strategy aims to being together the fields of information literacy and media literacy into a combined set of knowledge, skills and attitudes required for living and working in the 21st century.

Media and Information Literacy recognizes the primary role of information and media in our everyday lives. It lies at the core of freedom of expression and information – since it empowers citizens to understand the functions of media and other information providers, to critically evaluate their content, and to make informed decisions as users and producer of information and media content.

Media Literacy Now launches next phase of media literacy campaign with model bill and new national coalition partners

Media Literacy Now launches next phase of media literacy campaign with model bill and new national coalition partners | Educommunication | Scoop.it
I’m excited to announce that Media Literacy Now is taking a major step forward to ensure all students will have an opportunity to acquire the media literacy skills they need to be good digital citizens in the information age. This year we’re rolling out a new model bill that puts Media Literacy and Digital Citizenship together on legislative desks around the country.

Media Literacy Now developed the model bill in partnership with Common Sense Kids Action, The National Association for Media Literacy Education and the Digital Citizenship Institute. We are seeking state legislative sponsors to introduce the bill state by state for the coming legislative session, beginning in many states in January. The bill is based on the successful Washington bill passed earlier this year through the leadership of Claire Beach, president of Action for Media Education, with guidance and resources from Media Literacy Now.
