The constant evolution of information literacy

The constant evolution of information literacy | Educommunication | Scoop.it
Like many library and information user services, information literacy has undergone great changes over the last decade.

When electronic databases were introduced in libraries, information literacy classes focused on equipping users with skills to successfully navigate the databases. ...However, as our users evolve into today’s Google generation, information literacy classes also need to evolve.

Nordicom Review 38: Being Old in the Age of Mediatization

Nordicom Review 38: Being Old in the Age of Mediatization | Educommunication | Scoop.it
This special issue of Nordicom Review examines media dynamics in the lives of older people and how these dynamics influence the perceptions of old age, ageing and older people. From a number of different perspectives, the articles in the issue present studies of the specific consequences media have on the later part of the life cycle and how old age and ageing is affected and shaped by processes of mediatization. Mediatization research has thus far focused on various aspects of work life and public life, such as politics, religion, and conflict, while other studies have looked at parenthood, how children play, health, and sport. This issue concentrates on the question of how media influence our older generations and thus discusses how a mediatized society may contribute to confirming or altering conceptions of what it means to be old. In a predominantly Western context, older generations respond to a mediatized culture through various processes – including appropriation, adoption and resistance – and the articles in this issue illustrate how these processes take place.

Finding the truth in era of fake news

Finding the truth in era of fake news | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"Fake news is flooding the Internet, making it tough to distinguish right from wrong. Joanna M. Burkhardt, a University of Rhode Island librarian and professor, is on a crusade to help people find the truth—and that includes students. This summer, she spoke at the American Library Association’s annual conference in Chicago, and was recently interviewed about fake news for a podcast by American Libraries. Her article, “Combating Fake News in the Digital Age,” will be in “Library Technology Report” this fall, and last year her book came out, “Teaching Literacy Reframed: 50+ Framework-Based Exercises for Creating Information-Literate Learners.” “I’ve been busy,” says Burkhardt, “This is important. Students need to be careful today about how they use information and pass it along.” URI chatted with Burkhardt about fake new and its future."

Kids Are Losing Playtime to Achievement. That’s a Problem. | Educommunication | Scoop.it
The decline of play and rise of the overscheduled child has become a national concern. Peter Gray, author of Free to Learn, says that kids learn from observation, practice, and support. Most of this is done through play. But what happens when we limit the time kids spend playing, and what does our obsession with “high achievement” say about our culture as a whole?

Advocacy through videos: Short movies on school libraries

The Portuguese School Libraries Network Program (SLNP) has commemorated its 20th anniversary in 2016. Several initiatives were prepared to mark this event, some of them involving students, the main patrons of school libraries. “Short movies on school libraries” was a challenge presented to students. They would have to prove that their school library was the best through the production of a short movie, according to given rules. After that they could, during a certain period, publicize their video in the school communities through the school library YouTube Channel, blog and Facebook page. Finally, the videos were uploaded to the School Libraries Network (SLN) Facebook page, where people could like and comment them. The twenty videos that obtained a larger number of likes were the ones that got the right to be inserted in the SLN-20 years webpage. (20 years – 20 videos). Students had to mobilize their communities to like their movie and all the followers of SLN Facebook page were also invited to participate. This initiative involved almost 130 school libraries and more than 1000 students. In each school the process was monitored and coordinated by the teacher librarian. The critical thinking skills were exercised through this challenge. In fact, students had to brainstorm about what they consider relevant and most important in their school libraries and about the way to convey their idea to people who are not familiar with it. Another important matter of discussion was the way social media reach people and influence their way of thinking. Students had an opportunity to take advantage of that influence for a positive cause. It was an excellent way to advocate for school libraries by leading a lot of people that usually don’t pay attention to them, to be aware of the value they have for their children and teens.

Women and minorities still underrepresented in film, new study shows

Women and minorities still underrepresented in film, new study shows | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"In 2016 "Moonlight" won best picture and "Hidden Figures" was the 14th highest grossing film of the year, but popular Hollywood films remained as white and male-dominated as ever. A new report from the Media, Diversity, & Social Change Initiative at the University of Southern California's Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism finds that the representation of women, minorities, LGBT people, and disabled characters in films remains largely unchanged from the previous year, despite the heightened and attention to diversity in Hollywood. At the bottom of the rung and most egregiously disproportionate to their US demographics are women, Hispanics, and disabled characters."

Some Schools Are Abolishing Homework In Favor Of Reading, And That's A Good Thing

Some Schools Are Abolishing Homework In Favor Of Reading, And That's A Good Thing | Educommunication | Scoop.it
This September, the 20,000 elementary school students of Florida’s Marion County public school district will enter school with the promise that they will not be doing any more homework as part of their daily school life. The policy is introduced by the county’s new superintendent Heidi Maier. She motivated her decision with research that shows that homework does not improve achievement for younger students, but time free from school type activities is important for their development. The policy will exclude some occasional assignments, like science projects or research papers.

Grandparents Profile | Grandparents of Media Literacy

Anyone can upload an intellectual grandparent, providing information about their work that will enable readers to understand their key ideas and contributions. Anyone can share a story about any grandparent, explaining "how they influenced you." As an transdisciplinary topic, media literacy scholars and practitioners come from many backgrounds and fields, and we possess different kinds of foundational knowledge. We do not all rely on the same canonical texts that "tell the story" of our shared values and beliefs. Media literacy, therefore, has innumerable intellectual and metaphorial grandparents due to its transdisciplinary nature. We believe that personal storytelling can help people discover how we have been influenced by the generation of scholars and thinkers who came before us. Through this website, we aim to discover threads of previously overlooked connection to understand the subjectively-experienced history of media literacy education around the world. Please contribute to this website to share your story!

Development of a Media Literacy Skills Scale

"This study aims to develop a reliable and valid scale to identify the levels of media users' media literacy skills. The scale development process was carried out in nine steps as recommended in the literature. Before the scale was administered, the items were reviewed by field experts and language experts and a pilot study was carried out. Responses from 322 pre-service teachers, selected via purposeful sampling, were included in the analysis. Item discrimination was tested via item-total correlation and it indicated that none of the items were below .30. In the confirmatory factor analysis, it was found out that the scale and the theoretical model showed a fit between good and acceptable. Convergent validity, divergent validity and 27% upper-lower group means were also examined. As for the internal consistency, Cronbach's alpha value of the scale was calculated as .919 and alpha values of the factors were calculated as .768, .833, .720 and .838 respectively. The results revealed that Media Literacy Skills Scale, which consists of 45 items gathered under the four main factors of 'access, analyze, evaluate and communicate', is a reliable and valid measurement instrument. This up-to-date scale covers all main skills of media literacy and it consists of a sufficient number of questions to obtain rich data and ensure measurement precision. In addition, it covers new media as well as mass media and this way it fills a gap in the literature caused by the changing nature of media and technology."
