Australia’s kid-focused newspaper Crinkling News wants to teach media literacy to young readers

Australia’s kid-focused newspaper Crinkling News wants to teach media literacy to young readers | Educommunication | Scoop.it
Saffron Howden knew she was on the right track with Crinkling News, her Australian kid-focused weekly newspaper, within a few days of Donald Trump being elected. Even among Australian schoolchildren, there was a lot of trepidation about the implications of a Donald Trump presidency. One school introduced art therapy to help kids process their emotions.

The uncertainty that kids felt in November — much of which persists among both the young and not-so-young — underscored Howden’s initial motivation a year ago to create a newspaper written for the country’s young news consumers, ages 7 to 15. The world can be a scary place, she argues, and the country’s largest media companies were doing a poor job of explaining things in a way that kids could understand.

Theresa May tells Facebook, Twitter to offer kids in the U.K. the right to delete their information

Social media platforms including Facebook Inc. and Twitter Inc. could be forced to offer British young people the right to delete information about them if Theresa May is re-elected prime minister on June 8.

Users under the age of 18 will be able to request the removal of all records relating to them. The measure is one of a series that May’s Conservative Party will promise in its election manifesto, due to be published some time next week. It aims to both protect children online and make it easier for businesses to set up and operate on the web.

What media literacy means in the age of alternative facts | Center for Media Literacy

What media literacy means in the age of alternative facts | Center for Media Literacy | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"Post-truth, alternative facts and fake news. Media has changed a lot since we began tweeting, but the last year has left media and its consumers in a crisis. A Pew Research study revealed that 62 percent of adults get their news from social media. We now live in a hyper-partisan world where sensational fake news often spreads faster than real news, according to a post-election BuzzFeed analysis. In this age of citizen journalism, media literacy is a confusing proposition.

Adults may assume that digital natives, who can text, post and Google at the same time, are able to sort through the information onslaught better than they can. In fact, Stanford University released a study in November that indicates students have a lot of trouble discerning the credibility of online information. For example, 82 percent of middle schoolers couldn’t distinguish between an ad labeled “sponsored content” and a real news story on a website. Even worse, this study was completed well before the reports of fake news surrounding the u.s. presidential election surfaced.
There is hope."

Understand and decrypt TV news – e-MEL

This training scenario is designed around the critical analysis of the TV news. Training is structured on the six dimensions of Media Literacy: language, typologies, producers, audience, technologies and representations.

The training scenario integrates journalistic practices for a critical analysis. Concretely different issues are presented: the sources of information, its selection / hierarchy, its treatment, its language…  For each issue, training is based on empirical cases (TV news sequences) to be presented and discussed with the participants. Also trainer presents pedagogical activities (transferable in the classroom).

The training scenario includes an online part (on the E-lab) with theoretical contents and exercises and a monitoring process. This process suggests participants to collaboratively create educational material (transferable in the classroom) based on a critical review of TV news.

Fake news: if you care about being lied to you'll be more careful about the way you use social media

Fake news: if you care about being lied to you'll be more careful about the way you use social media | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"Fake news has become big news over the past few months. And that’s mainly due to the election of Donald Trump, who is famously given to accusing his critics of making up stories about him, but who is himself arguably the biggest purveyor of misinformation ever to occupy the White House.

The fake news juggernaut rolls on, mainly on social media, polarising opinion and sowing division in its wake. Facing a barrage of criticism from both politicians and the “traditional” media, some of the biggest internet companies have come up with their own plans to address the problem."

How gaming in the classroom prepares children for life in a surveillance state | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"It’s well known that surveillance effects how we behave. A recent study on the issue showed that traffic to Wikipedia articles on controversial subjects dropped off significantly after Edward Snowden revealed widespread Internet surveillance by the NSA and GCHQ. This shows both the short and long-term effect that intrusion into our private lives can have on perfectly legal activities. It also reflects the “panopticon effect” described by French social theorist Michel Foucault."
