Practical PBL: Design an Instructional Unit in Seven Phases | Edutopia

Practical PBL: Design an Instructional Unit in Seven Phases | Edutopia | Educator Professional Learning | Scoop.it

By Amber Graber

"You can transform your classroom. While there are many approaches to project-based learning, we have had the most success with the model our team developed -- a model called "The Seven Phases of a Project Cycle." Each and every one of our instructional units is designed using these seven phases.

"To begin, ask yourself these questions:

What instructional unit do I want to transform?

What engaging, relevant, real-world problem could students attempt to solve that is related to the concepts and skills in the unit?

What authentic roles can students take on to try solving this problem?

How might students be asked to work collaboratively to try solving this problem?"

Kids Share Their Thoughts on Student Engagement | Edutopia

Kids Share Their Thoughts on Student Engagement | Edutopia | Educator Professional Learning | Scoop.it

"A while back, I was asked, "What engages students?" Sure, I could respond, sharing anecdotes about what I believed to be engaging, but I thought it would be so much better to lob that question to my own eighth graders. The responses I received from all 220 of them seemed to fall under 10 categories, representing reoccurring themes that appeared again and again. So, from the mouths of babes, here are my students' answers to the question: "What engages students?"

In Classroom Experiment, All Discussion Happened via Twitter - Wired Campus - The Chronicle of Higher Education | Educator Professional Learning | Scoop.it

Fairfax, Va. — Students at George Mason University shifted their feet and chatted outside a classroom here on Tuesday morning, waiting for Stephen Groening’s class on cellphone cultures to begin. On tap was not an ordinary classroom discussion about the assigned readings. Instead, the entire conversation would take place by Twitter, and students were nervous.

"You can access professional development over the summer without racing through airports or hitting your bank account. The computer is your friend, and one of the friendliest activities it will host is micro-blogging, thanks to Twitter. Besides your own 140-character missives (it takes some practice to say a lot in a little space), you can find hundreds of educators sharing how-to’s, infographics, and other interesting pedagogical finds. Blogging at their site AskteacherZ: Inspirational Education, two Michigan teachers make the case for PD through tweeting, noting not only the shared ideas but also the grassroots, isolation-breaking community experience.

"If you are new to Twitter, read Daniel Edwards’ story of his evolution from skeptic to devotee in “Teachers – The 10 Stages of Twitter.” And if you’re an old hand, read the UK educator’s post for several good laughs. Total novices can get started with eight brief videos from David Wees, an educator who provides learning support for technology at an IB school in Canada and also facilitates the Edutopia Assessment group".

10 Reasons Why Some People Love What They Do - Forbes | Educator Professional Learning | Scoop.it

Continuing my research into what motivates highly respected achievers, I’ve come across a few gleaming nuggets of a subject that eludes most of us – what makes some people truly love their jobs.  And by “love” I don’t mean that they never have a day when they’d rather be doing anything but their job, but rather that they experience a consistent contentment with what they do.
