Library For All Kickstarter Seeks To Support Global Literacy

Library For All Kickstarter Seeks To Support Global Literacy | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it

"Mobile access around the world continues to expand, yet access to educational materials is still largely limited in developing countries. What’s the hold up?... Shipping books is costly – and more often than not – the material is outdated, culturally disparate, and/or linguistically incompatible with the end users. In short, the books being sent aren’t beneficial if the kids are unable to understand what they’re reading. Library For All wants to change this reality by launching a digital library platform in Haiti this Fall."

EDTECH@UTRGV's insight:

Cool idea... I would support this effort.

"It could be argued—and probably argued well—that what a student fundamentally needs to know today isn’t much different than what Tom Sawyer or Joan of Arc or Alexander the Great needed to know."

I wish we had a class in digital literacy, because these 63 points could be the bedrock of the curriculum. In the meantime, I will be sharing this list with my Library Advisory Board. I'd love to see them develop short videos for our TV news on specific topics or infographics to display in the library.

Helping Teachers Use Technology and Technology Experts Teach

Helping Teachers Use Technology and Technology Experts Teach | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it

"Although many teachers now have grown-up in the technology age, many traditional or “old-school” teachers are still not feeling equipped to teach in the classroom of the 21st century."

rodrick rajive lal's curator insight, July 22, 2:56 AM
Strangely enough, there continues to be resistance towards the use of technology amongst a large number of teachers who have graduated till the nineties. Fortunately enough many of them use smartphones! Optimum integration of technology in teaching will happen only when teachers are involved in the decision-making process, they are given enough training and support rather than being dumped into the deep end, and yes, the technology should be 'user-friendly'. We have moved away from chalk and talk, we use laptops and projectors in class, we have wifi, and are soon going have students bringing their own devices.

The Five Stages Of Tech Disruption

The Five Stages Of Tech Disruption | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it

"Most people already know how Kodak was way too slow to recognise the camera market’s rapid switch to digital. The fatal blow to Kodak was the rapid wholesale destruction of its consumables business – film. Losing ground on camera sales certainly hastened the end but it was the collapse of film and processing that did it in."

This article comes as a great surprise just as we are considering BOYD in school. Research according to the article suggests that laptops might be more of a distraction than a tool to augment learning. Grades drop as a result of social networking. Students are zoned out because of being constantly connected. We once blamed television for deteriorating concentration spans, laptops have reduced concentration spans even more. Let us not jump on to the bandwagon, let us research further whether we should really allow school students to bring their own devices to school.

10 Ways to Create the Classroom of the Future

10 Ways to Create the Classroom of the Future | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it

"While educational standards may differ from school to school there is one thing that is always nearly the same: the classroom set out. Desks are arranged in rows or groups, and the teacher stands at the front and teach. This set out has changed very little in a hundred years even with all the technological advancements that have been made. Edtech not only changes the way that children learn but changes the way they interact with one another, the classroom space and their teacher."

Metacognition in Artifical Intelligence might take some time to understand. How we think and why we think in a particular way might still be mysteries for most of us. I Guess, there might be some amount of unpredictability even in AI. How do we know that AI might not at some point of time not turn against its creators? This is a worrisome scenario described by many Science Fiction writers. How do we prevent AI from going rogue? Do we really know enough about Metacognition, or for that effect, the essence of thinking? What is there to prevent a self-driven car from crashing into a tree?
