Social Media Use Continues to Evolve for Teachers, Students

Social Media Use Continues to Evolve for Teachers, Students | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it

"Social media that create communities without walls are also very good at breaking down necessary boundaries, schools find. Courtney Flynn of Voice News reports that Michigan high schools take different tacks in defining how teachers and students can relate outside of classroom hours."

EDTECH@UTRGV's insight:

Over the past 5 years, I have been successfully using a host of social media platforms, including blogs, microblogs, wikis, and cloud-based file sharing to maintain continual contact with students in my online graduate courses. What I like most about these tools is that they allow us to communicate and collaborate through our smart mobile devices without having to log in to the LMS. We are essentially "plugged in" 24/7.

With our students centering their lives around social media it is important to think about how we can use this as an educational strength.  There are many ways teachers can incorporate this within their classrooms to get students more engaged in their learning.

Jennifer Colin's curator insight, October 25, 2015 2:28 PM

This article outlines the advantages and disadvantages of social media as used by teachers and students.  We have seen our fair share of cyberbullying at our school, but administration works with parents and students to swiftly nip it in the bud.  When our students learn that what they say outside of school can have consequences in school as well, they are usually quick to deter that type of behavior.  Regarding teachers friending students on FB, the management company of our charter school "strongly discourages" it, yet there many staff who friend students despite this advice.  As an administrator I think I would work to make this type of relationship against policy.  Teachers and students have plenty of ways to build relationships, but connections on FB can too easily push the boundaries of what is appropriate.  Encouraging the use of other means such as Edmodo, which better fit the student-teacher connection, seems a wiser way to go.
