Using Rewards to Reinforce ELearning

Using Rewards to Reinforce ELearning | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it

"From a very young age we are taught new information as a means to avoid punishment, or earn a reward. This starts when we are small children to learn basic social skills and continues through grade school in the form of formal grades on coursework.

There is nothing wrong with this approach. It works and it taps into the core of human nature.

Rewards based learning is more than just offering incentives though, it can actually be quite involved. Essentially, you can design your rewards to reinforce not only the content, but also to encourage growth in behavior and collaboration."

Managing Your Digital Classroom with Wearable Technology

Managing Your Digital Classroom with Wearable Technology | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it

"On a typical day, there are three stations in my classroom: a teacher station where I conduct small group instruction, a collaborative station where students work cooperatively to complete a task, and a work station where students work independently to complete asynchronous tasks. With three distinct groups working simultaneously, one might wonder how a can teacher respond to each and every student misunderstanding.

My answer: the Pebble."

EDTC@UTB's insight:

I have a Pebble watch and i LOVE it. It lets me know who is texting, emailing, or calling me without having to take my iPhone out of my pocket.

6 virtual field trips to give lesson plans a boost

6 virtual field trips to give lesson plans a boost | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it

"One of the benefits of technology is the access it provides those in the classroom. There is now access to data on students before they ever enter classrooms, to curriculums from multiple companies, to stellar lesson plans, and to in-depth videos, articles, and photo galleries on numerous subjects. These resources can be used to take students on "virtual" field trips from the comfort of the classroom. For schools facing tight budgets, or just not feasibly close enough to a location of interest, these trips are valuable opportunities to expand students' horizons."

Technology as Barrier to Online Learning

Technology as Barrier to Online Learning | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it

"The xMOOC model that emerged in 2012 has not changed much in 2014, with completion rates and participation rates just as low as they were when concrete data on completion rates appeared in 2013 (Parr, 2013). Though there are a variety of factors that contribute to low completion rates, I suggest that three barriers, 1) technology, 2) poor usability & course design, and 3) anonymity contribute significantly to low student participation levels and completion—barriers that deter, discourage and in some cases intimidate students."

E-Learning vs IT: an impending hiring disaster

E-Learning vs IT: an impending hiring disaster | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it

"Leafing through my little regional magazine last weekend, I noticed a job advert from the local secondary school for an “iSchool Project Coordinator”. I like to keep up with what’s happening related to e-learning in the area and read further to see what this curious role was meant to be. Still scratching my head, I went to the website and downloaded the whole application pack. 22 pages later, I am troubled by what they’re trying to achieve with this hire: an über IT/e-learning superhuman happy to work for low pay."

You can complete the various steps more quickly and cycle through them several times, with the goal to build usable (though not necessarily beautiful and perfect) iterations that can generate useful feedback from project stakeholders, and a superior final product that you complete on time and on budget.”
