How Online Courses Can Form a Basis for On-Campus Teaching - Daphne Koller

How Online Courses Can Form a Basis for On-Campus Teaching - Daphne Koller | Educational Technology in Higher Education | Scoop.it

Last week, Antioch University announced its intention to allow students to take credit-bearing classes based on some of the courses offered on Coursera. Until now, online courses have been used primarily in one of two ways: as MOOCs (non-credit-bearing classes open to anyone), and within the academic institutions producing these classes, to support a “flipped classroom” model for their own registered students.

Pearson unveils OER search engine

If you can’t beat them, join them.

That is Pearson’s latest approach to open educational resources (OER) — the free online learning materials that have proliferated over the last decade and a half, posing a threat to traditional publishers.

The education and media company today will unveil Project Blue Sky, a search engine to help instructors locate free materials from popular OER repositories.

The LMS Instructure Enters the MOOC Fray | Educational Technology in Higher Education | Scoop.it

Not content with being the young upstart in the LMS industry taking on the aging giants of Blackboard and Desire2Learn, Instructure has now decided to enter another market and take on some of the upstarts there, namely Coursera and edX. That is, tonight it launches the Canvas Network, which in the words of CEO Josh Coates, is “our answer to the whole MOOC hype.

Cable on Free vs Open | iterating toward openness

Cable on Free vs Open | iterating toward openness | Educational Technology in Higher Education | Scoop.it

As I’ve been saying, the real risk of the On the Fence MOOCs (aka xMOOCs) is that they confuse people about “open.” “Open” does not “mean free to access but copyrighted,” like Udacity and Coursera are. Open means free access plus free 4R permissions. The On the Fence MOOCs are drawing energy and attention away from where the real battle is happening – in open educational resources. OER is the only space where everyone has permission to make and redistribute the changes necessary to best support learning in their local context.

CourseSmart announces analytics program to measure student engagement

CourseSmart announces analytics program to measure student engagement | Educational Technology in Higher Education | Scoop.it

It has never been too hard to spot the student in class who didn’t do the assigned reading -- she’s usually the one in the back, not raising her hand, and avoiding eye contact in hopes of not being called on. But a new program could make identifying unprepared students even easier, and, the creators hope, improve outcomes and retention.
