Jim Phillips: On the Curation of Instructional Content (EDUCAUSE Review)

Jim Phillips: On the Curation of Instructional Content (EDUCAUSE Review) | Educational Technology in Higher Education | Scoop.it

Higher education institutions are prodigious content producers. Although there are long-standing policies in place to permit the curation of instructional content and of the transactional artifacts of the learning experience, librarians have traditionally concentrated more attention on research. This stance is quite justifiable given the massive amount of research data being generated today as a result of revised data-planning requirements by grant-funding agencies. However, with the tacit rules governing instruction and with market pressures rapidly evolving, has the time come for librarians to intentionally curate instructional content, in all its unwieldy diversity? And as we come to better understand the lasting value of data analytics, what would be the consequences of inaction?

John Bostock's curator insight, October 10, 2013 8:38 AM

A very interesting article that raises the issue of ownership and use of teaching materials. It suggests they may increasingly be held by commercial companies (such as Pearson OpenClass) unless university libraries take a more active role in curation, archiving and ensuring accessibility. Add into this debate the rise of Open Educational Resources and you have a very potent set of issues concerning for instance, power, academic freedom, intellectual property rights management, student and teacher privacy......

When Educators Become Curators

When Educators Become Curators | Educational Technology in Higher Education | Scoop.it

A few weeks ago I had the privilege of being the virtual keynote speaker at the Croation MoodleMoot. Thanks to Sandra Kucina and Jasmin Klindžić for inviting me, and making everything happen so smoothly.

We agreed that, in line with my PhD topic, I would focus not on Moodle, but on the new digital curation skills being required of all teachers. So it began as an introduction to digital curation and then looked at how educators can curate inside or outside of an LMS. Thanks to those Croatian Moodlers in the Twitter stream for engaging with me afterwards. More feedback is welcome. I look forward to developing my ideas further…

Digital Curation: Alternatives to Storify

Digital Curation: Alternatives to Storify | Educational Technology in Higher Education | Scoop.it

As I wrote in one of the early ProfHacker blog posts, it’s always a good idea to have a backup plan. This truth was brought home to me this semester in my teaching.

About a month ago, students in my course on “Writing in Digital Environments” began experimenting with Storify, a social media curation tool we’ve covered before here at

Curatr: Using Visualization Navigation for Static Content with Social and Gamification Elements

Curatr: Using Visualization Navigation for Static Content with Social and Gamification Elements | Educational Technology in Higher Education | Scoop.it

Publishing research and publishing self-paced, text- and image-based e-learning are similar. Over time, you end up with a great deal of content. Search for something broad like “RSS” and you’ll likely find links to documents, videos, presentation, case studies, research reports, tools, answers to questions, etc. It can be a bit onerous leaving one rummaging through links asking questions like ‘what should I read first?,’ ‘where can I find examples of how specific companies are using RSS?’, ‘what do analysts say about RSS in 2012?’. I found that with Curatr, I could arrange various research objects in such a way that they would flow together a bit better in a nice visual format (which looks great on an iPad BTW).
