Pearson unveils OER search engine

If you can’t beat them, join them.

 

That is Pearson’s latest approach to open educational resources (OER) — the free online learning materials that have proliferated over the last decade and a half, posing a threat to traditional publishers.

 

The education and media company today will unveil Project Blue Sky, a search engine to help instructors locate free materials from popular OER repositories.

Pearson Moves Deeper Into Online Education With $650-Million Purchase | Educational Technology in Higher Education | Scoop.it

Pearson, a publishing and education company whose products include books, newspapers, and online services, announced a major acquisition on Tuesday that will deepen its commitment to becoming a major player in online education.

The company, which owns the Financial Times and the Penguin Group book publisher, shelled out $650-million in cash to buy EmbanetCompass, a business that provides support services to colleges and universities that are moving their programs online.

The California State University is the largest system of senior higher education in the country, with 23 campuses, approximately 427,000 students and 44,000 faculty and staff. The CSU awards about 99,000 degrees. Many of its campuses already offer online courses.

I’ve been meaning to talk about my Udacity classes for a while. As this post got longer I’ve been going back and forth on whether to break it up. At the same time as all sorts of ridiculous events have transpired in the world of real higher ed, Udacity – whose classes I actually like, as I’ll make clear - has been doing annoying, tech-boy things. I think the straw that broke the camel’s back was Saturday’s email telling me to shill one of their new classes to my friends and family, because “I am trying to break the student record for the largest online class ever taught.” It was ostensibly from Udacity/Stanford instructor Sebastian Thrun – it was signed “Sebastian Thrun, Professor”, at any rate.
