New Google Digital Literacy and Citizenship Curriculum Now Available — iKeepSafe

New Google Digital Literacy and Citizenship Curriculum Now Available — iKeepSafe | Educational Technology for Middle Schoolers | Scoop.it

"In discussions about contemplative pedagogy a great deal of attention has been devoted to practical applications of mindfulness in the classroom (what we might call “mindfulness-based pedagogy”). The tendency in this approach is to view mindfulness as a type of technology that can be used to enhance the quality and effectiveness of the teaching and learning experience.

"While there are many wonderful benefits of this approach, it generally abstracts mindfulness from its historical roots as a practice aimed at moral and spiritual development. The purpose of this presentation is to recover the value of traditional meditation practice as a means of cultivating the capacities or virtues characteristic of the mindful teacher."

This will come in very useful for us in school.

Heidi Hutchison's curator insight, August 27, 2013 9:18 AM

Looks like a great resource. I liken getting kids to understand their digital footprint to getting them to understand the choices they make now, affects the direction their life will go later. Definitely a tough lesson to learn and teach! we need all the help we can get! :)

Zeega is a great tool for creating digital narrative. Users can add their own media as well as using found media from around the internet and media supplied by Zeega. They drag media onto digital pages and can edit them and add their own text commentary and sound track. Here's a great example http://zeega.com/152325 which celebrates 50 years since martin Luther King's 'I had a dream' speech.

We continue to use technology to reinforce 19th century teaching practice' | Educational Technology for Middle Schoolers | Scoop.it

why [has] technology, to date, had very little impact on improved learning outcomes? This could be because we continue to use technology to reinforce 19th century teaching practice to meet out-dated assessment models. Most of the world’s curriculum and assessment systems are based around fact recall rather than actually demonstrating that you have learned something and can deploy it within a problem-solving situation.

"Another Brick In The Wall" - Pink Flloyd

The Planetary Archives / San Francisco, California's curator insight, November 17, 2013 3:12 PM

Our  education system is nothing more than child-care with some

indoctrination thown in.

See/hear "The Wall" by Pink Floyd  (40+ years ago.)

Let the children play until they are old enough to decide what they are interested in learning. That's completely different than training them from Day 1 to "sit still, be quiet, and obey authority." Training a 5-year old to become a "worker" or 'Businessman"  is not education, but it may be child abuse.
