Answer to a Tough Question - Huffington Post

Answer to a Tough Question - Huffington Post | Educational Technology for Elementary Teachers | Scoop.it
Answer to a Tough Question Huffington Post The third grade teachers may have made heroic efforts, but the fourth grade teachers are still saying to themselves, "These kids just aren't ready." The same is true for the transitions from elementary to...
it442's insight:

This article is talking about how teachers think they are preparing students for the next grade but in actuality the next grade's teachers do not have students that are prepared for the new year. This is an interesting trend since it demonstrates a disconnect between what teachers think is happening in their classroom and the learning that students are actually leaving with at the end of the year. This also shows how vital collaboration between grades is since what students learn in one grade will have lasting effects on the grades that follow. The effects of teaching in the elementary grades also will effect student graduation rates and the number of students that are prepared when they enter high school and into college. As a elementary teacher candidate it is important to see how what I do in my future classroom must be aligned with the learning that will follow in the higher grades.

12 Ways To Integrate (Not Just Use) Technology In Education

12 Ways To Integrate (Not Just Use) Technology In Education | Educational Technology for Elementary Teachers | Scoop.it
If you run a classroom, school, district, or country, you need to know how to properly integrate technology in education. This should help.

Via Felix Jacomino
it442's insight:

This article is really interesting. It talks about the difference between merely using technology, and actually integrating it into the classroom. It gives scenarios, examples, and compares and contrasts the ideas of "using" and "integrating". I found it to be a good reminder of the ideas that our lessons should not be based around the technology itself, but instead, used in the same way as any other learning tool, to help make learning accessible.

Elsa Mansfield's curator insight, May 16, 2013 6:21 PM

Being purposeful about incorporating technology in our learning tasks will be vital to being an effective teacher. Students need to be taught how to use these tools and navigate the volume of information the internet presents. Using technology without direction and purpose can create problems and wastes tremendous potential.

it442's curator insight, May 16, 2013 10:04 PM

Elsa Mansfield-This article talks about using technology to learn instead of learning how to use technology. Integration involves making technology a part of the everyday classroom, and using it to engage studetns with information or content. I like the idea of being very purposeful with employing technology in a variety of ways and incorporating technology in our learning tasks constantly.  Using technology without direction and purpose can create problems and wastes tremendous potential.

Effects of Technology on Classrooms and Students

The perceived effects of reform-based technology use on students and classroom practices are discussed.
it442's insight:

I really enjoyed reading about he different benefits of technology in the classroom. Though it is true that it some kids may be more technologically iliterate, I feel with proper teaching and scaffolding of how to use technology, it can be a major benefit in learning. I agreed with the author that technology does increase motiviation and engagement, which I have witnessed many times while working with students. The article also made me realize how that technoly can increase collaboration between peers and gives students many creative avenues to present projects or knowledge.

This article talks about technology integration in a kindergarten classroom. In our IT442 class, we've been talking mostly about how technology can be used with older students, but not so much with the students who are just learning to read. I found this article to be very interesting. It gives a lot of great ideas for how teachers can introduce computers to young learners, and how we can utilize these programs most appropriately in the classroom. It's fascinating to see how advanced technology is getting, and how the times are changing from when I was in school. I know most people my age, and up, will find this to be extremely inciteful.

Study: Emerging Technology Has Positive Impact in Classroom

Study: Emerging Technology Has Positive Impact in Classroom | Educational Technology for Elementary Teachers | Scoop.it
A recent study highlights educators' feelings of goodwill toward technological innovation.
it442's insight:

This article talks about the integration of technology inside the classroom, and while many teachers are moving towards using technology in the classroom in order to help engage their students, many teachers are still resistant to change. In the beginning of the article is states an example in which technology and i-tunes were used in order to help a math teacher engage her students in the learning of the difficult material. She was able to record her lectures  using a screen recording and video editing program which enabled her to put her lectures on i-tunes for her students to listen to at home ( homework). Class time was then used for the students to come to class with questions, generate a discussion about the material, and go over problems that they may have been having a hard time with. After this strategy of teaching was implemented many results showed improvement in the student's math scores.
