BYOT New Rule: Develop Classroom Expectations for Technology Use | MyWeb4Ed | Educational Technology & eLearning | Scoop.it

With BYOT implementation comes Acceptable Use policies and lots of exposure to the Technology staff of the district as they help prepare teachers for the the use of personal devices as educational tools in the classroom. This has led to a problem in the management of classes as teachers encounter new issues or face a different kind of challenge.

MOOCs: Who’s using MOOCs? 10 different target audiences

MOOCs: Who’s using MOOCs? 10 different target audiences | Educational Technology & eLearning | Scoop.it

The problem is that the decision makers often don’t have the marketing skills to differentiate between different addressable audiences. External adult learners may not want a long-winded, over-engineered, six to ten week course on anything. Life’s too short. Yet academics are used to producing courses of this semester length. What many may want are mini MOOCs. They may want them to be asynchronous starting and ending when convenient for them. This, of course, is exactly what’s happening. All in all, however, the good news is that MOOCs are forcing HE institutions to change. MOOCs may very well be the force that makes them more open, transparent and relevant. There will, of course, be a backlash, but the digital genie is out of the bottle - MOOCs are here to stay.

This is a scathing but quite reasonably argued critic of Sugata Mitra's hole in the wall project. Worth reading.

8 Research Findings Supporting the Benefits of Gamification in Education | Emerging Education Technology | Educational Technology & eLearning | Scoop.it

Of course, the “gamification” of educational generally refers to the idea of incorporating gaming elements in instruction and instructional tools, such as the use of digital badges in an online learning application. But with findings such as those below indicating that game playing can enhance the learning process, it is logical to assume that the use of gaming mechanics and concepts in educational tools and processes can also yield benefits. Naturally, it is left to the reader to draw their own conclusions after perusing this content and the original published sources cited.

Why Our Schools Need EdTech Professionals

Why Our Schools Need EdTech Professionals | Educational Technology & eLearning | Scoop.it

The professional workforce has been quick to adopt new technology tools. We readily accept that tablets and smartphones, teleconferencing and social media are now essential fixtures of the workplace for millions across the globe. Yet we've been slow in extending these advances to our schools, and in particular our K-12 schools. While many children's home lives are abuzz with the same platforms and devices as the 21st century workplace, school just hasn't kept pace, and in many classrooms pedagogies are barely more inclusive of new technology than they were in the 1980s.

How the internet is changing English

How the internet is changing English | Educational Technology & eLearning | Scoop.it

Unesco estimates that half of the world's 6,000 languages will have disappeared by the end of the century - but new research shows that social media and text messaging in particular are promoting and supporting language diversity.

Texting is now conducted by speakers of around 5,000 languages.

"Text messaging is the most linguistically diverse form of written communication that has ever existed," says Munroe.

"It's also become the first form of written communication of many of the world's languages," he says.

"Most have only ever been spoken. But the technology and economics of text messages and the proliferation of cells phones means it's the most economic option of communication."

Asynchronous, self-actuated, playful ... why mobile learning outdoes the traditional classroom
Alfredo Corell's curator insight, December 15, 2012 7:11 PM

Mobile Learning is about self-actuated personalization.

As learning practices and technology tools change, mobile learning itself will continue to evolve. For 2013, the focus is on a variety of challenges, from how learners access content to how the idea of a “curriculum” is defined.

Technology like tablets PCs, apps, and access to broadband internet are lubricating the shift to mobile learning, but a truly immersive mobile learning environment goes beyond the tools for learning to the lives and communities valued by each individual learner.
