The Value of Guided Projects in Makerspaces | Renovated Learning

The Value of Guided Projects in Makerspaces | Renovated Learning | Educational Technology | Scoop.it
Guidelines and instructions are not the enemy of makerspaces.  Working through guided projects can help students to develop the skills that they need to further explore creatively.  It’s true that some students can just figure it out, but most need that gentle push to get them started.  While things like LEGOs and K’nex are intuitive, many other activities are not.  If you just sat me down in front of an Arduino with no guidance, I wouldn’t have a clue what to do.  But after following some example projects, I can start to feel more comfortable with branching out on my own.

The problem comes when all we ever do are guided projects.  Sylvia Martinez and Gary Stager warn against the “20 identical birdhouses” style class projects, where there is zero creativity involved.  It’s very easy to fall into the trap of focusing too much on standards, rubrics and guided projects and zapping all the fun and creativity out, turning a makerspace into nothing more than another classroom.  It’s tempting for many educators to just print out a list of instructions, sit students down in front of a “maker kit” and check their e-mail while students work through the steps one by one.  This is obviously not what we want in our makerspaces.

Why It’s Critical for the Next Gen to Be Tech Creators Not Consumers

Why It’s Critical for the Next Gen to Be Tech Creators Not Consumers | Educational Technology | Scoop.it
According to Ayah Bdeir, technology is the language of our time. The 33-year-old founder and CEO of littleBits likes to compare the engineers of today to the clergy of the Middle Ages, who controlled access to knowledge and power via their monopoly over the use and understanding of the written word. Why the behaviour argument against mobile devices is flawed

Why the behaviour argument against mobile devices is flawed | Educational Technology | Scoop.it
The idea of prohibiting mobile devices in school may appear attractive, and a ban could be the right call in some circumstances. But suggesting that “all headteachers worth their salt” should ban mobile devices – as Sir Michael Wilshaw, head of England’s schools inspectorate Ofsted, did recently – does not really address the challenges and opportunities that the devices present to schools. Forcing students to enter an alternative reality every morning where the mobile internet doesn’t exist is probably not the answer.

Why teachers need to use technology to increase their productivity

Why teachers need to use technology to increase their productivity | Educational Technology | Scoop.it
Yes, even if it’s not too evident yet, digital and technology smart classrooms are creeping into and taking a hold of the education system and it’s good that they are. The technology today offers a gazillion tools to enhance the learning process and the teaching process.

Blackboard tools, presentations softwares, recordkeeping softwares like Excel and more, podcasts, interesting learning activities, and games to make learning more fun, and visualization tools, are just a start.

Although the implementation of all these tools requires capital, in the long run it is much cheaper and cost effective than the traditional tools for teaching.

#Coding in the #Classroom: A Long-Overdue Inclusion - @Edutopia

#Coding in the #Classroom: A Long-Overdue Inclusion - @Edutopia | Educational Technology | Scoop.it
One need not look to superstars such as Mark Zuckerberg or Bill Gates to justify reasons for using code and programming logic in the classroom. There's plenty of literature that illustrates its positive learning outcomes. Coding in the classroom is linked to improved problem solving and analytical reasoning, and students who develop a mastery of coding have a "natural ability and drive to construct, hypothesize, explore, experiment, evaluate, and draw conclusions."

But there are other compelling reasons for integrating code in the classroom.

Donald Clark Plan B: 10 examples of how ‘DEVICE fetish’ is ruining EdTech | Educational Technology | Scoop.it

Turtle projects are infrastructure projects that improve bandwidth in schools, the Open University, Janet & SuperJanet, Wikipedia, Khan Academy, YouTube, MOOCs. Moodle… I could go on all day. None of these initiatives are device-focused. They focus on cognitive ergonomics not consumer electronics. Lesson here – stop the largely wasted research on device-based projects, the endless stream of apps and do not keep on taking (and buying) the tablets. Think about learning and learners not devices.

Being a Marine myself I think of it everyday already. Its sad that at  a young age of 17 with parent consent and a high school diploma or 18 on up a person male or female can enlist into the military and put their life on the line regardless of wartime or not and somehow or someway find themselves homeless or worse homeless with substance abuse and mental illness all at the same time. Keep in mind this was not the issue before enlisting. This, if I am not mistaken as always been a problem for all the years we had a military. Marine Corp birthday 10 November 1776.

Best video editing apps for iPhone and iPad - Cult of Mac

Best video editing apps for iPhone and iPad - Cult of Mac | Educational Technology | Scoop.it
Long gone are the days where video editing has to take hours and involve your Mac. Thanks to the iPhone and iPad, I’ve put together some awesome, professional-looking video. Depending on what your needs are, and how much control you want over the process, these are currently the best video editing apps I’ve found for iPhone and iPad.

Before we get into my picks, I’ll preface this by saying that I only considered apps that have universal support for both iPhone and iPad. Some apps, like Splice, can be great choices, but they are only available on one device or the other.

Where video editing is concerned, most people only want to learn one user interface. Otherwise, things can start to get overwhelming. That’s why I looked at the ease of putting together a great-looking, easily shareable video in addition to comparing features of these top apps.

In his 2013 book “The One World Schoolhouse,” Khan offered the world a small glimpse into some of what would eventually be the Lab School’s cornerstones: human interactivity, technology, creative projects.

Why Teaching Is The Best Job In The World - TeachThought

Why Teaching Is The Best Job In The World - TeachThought | Educational Technology | Scoop.it
Sometimes, good teachers quit. Teaching is an increasingly demanding job with divergent influences, dynamic sources of innovation, and aging dogma that makes it all a struggle. It can be emotionally draining, and at times, impossible.

But in lieu of that–and in an age where start-ups are glorified, entertainment is endlessly emphasized, and tech is kind, teaching continues to be the best job in the world. Or at least I think so anyway. Here are 7 reasons why.
