Apple simplifies bulk book and app deployment with new 'managed distribution' program

Apple simplifies bulk book and app deployment with new 'managed distribution' program | Educational Technology | Scoop.it
Apple has replaced the unwieldy process of distributing hundreds or thousands of individual redemption codes with a new, streamlined method that allows administrators to remotely "assign" apps and textbooks to students or teachers.

Via Sam Gliksman, Michele Velthuizen
Kathy Silvas's insight:

Heard about this from my campus technologist.  Since SBMS has 900+ managed iPads in the hands of our students and faculty, it sounds like a BIG step in the right direction.

Cate Dymek's curator insight, December 19, 2013 4:07 PM

This is such a needed change. It has always been such an issue to get textbooks back from students. With this new technology, students are not responsible for any textsbooks, just their technology! Students who easily lose things have no need to worry, and it will be make inventory so much easier!

Michele Velthuizen's curator insight, February 7, 12:42 AM

But when will this finally come to the Netherlands?!

Jonathan Jarc's curator insight, February 11, 5:00 AM

Rethinking Time During the Day for Professional Development by Todd Bloomer, Assistant Principal at Winston Churchill High School in San Antonio Eric
Kathy Silvas's insight:

My school district already allows core teachers a 2nd planning period for Team planning, but I don't know that they specifically use that time for more than planning.  I like the ideas in this article because they recognize that when you ask teachers to do something more, you also need to give them a little less -- it's a give and take for plates that are already very full.

Cut to the Core: Modesto to Replace Librarians with Teachers

Cut to the Core: Modesto to Replace Librarians with Teachers | Educational Technology | Scoop.it
On March 6, the Modesto Bee reported that “Modesto [Calif.] city schools are poised to cut 29 full-time teaching positions for next year, including most elementary school librarians.”
Kathy Silvas's insight:

It never ceases to amaze me how top-level education administrators, such as those in Modesto can look at a librarian and NOT see someone who can provide "computer technical instruction from a credentialed teacher."  Seriously?!  I wholehearted agree with the article's author -- it's too bad they don't see (yet) the damage they are doing to their programs.

iPads vs. chromebooks in a 1:1 environment

Many schools are looking into 1:1 programs and the specific devices that can make up the foundation of these programs. Having access to a personal Chromebook as well, I would like to share my experience as a student in a high school that is beginning a 1:1 program with iPads.
Kathy Silvas's insight:

This is an excellent, well-written perspective written by a High School student on the usability of iPads vs. Chromebooks in the classroom.  He chose to use his own Chromebook over the school-issued iPad for most projects.
