Andrew McCluskey's curator insight, July 26, 2013 1:32 PM

I think this is great and the data certainly shows that having music playing in these environments clearly helps the animals.  Where I struggle is the reasoning and "marketing" behind the music that has been "specially" made just for the animals.

I get that dogs have fantastic hearing but the studies that I'm familiar with have more to do with tempo and what I would call "energy" (classical versus heavy metal) than they do with custom created music with specific frequencies baked in.

I'm not saying that there isn't something there - I just don't see the hard evidence and I suspect that any kind of low energy, slower tempo music is going to have the same effect.

Combined computing power of 200,000 private PCs helps astronomers take an inventory of the Milky Way

Combined computing power of 200,000 private PCs helps astronomers take an inventory of the Milky Way | Educational Technology | Scoop.it

The Einstein@Home project connects home and office PCs of volunteers from around the world to a global supercomputer. Using this computer cloud, an international team lead by scientists from the Max Planck Institutes for Gravitational Physics and for Radio Astronomy analysed archival data from the CSIRO Parkes radio telescope in Australia. Using new search methods, the global computer network discovered 24 pulsars – extraordinary stellar remnants with extreme physical properties. These can be used as testbeds for Einstein's general theory of relativity and could help to complete our picture of the pulsar population

"We could only conduct our search thanks to the enormous computing power provided by the Einstein@Home volunteers," says Benjamin Knispel, researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute/AEI) in Hannover, and lead author of the study now published in The Astrophysical Journal. "Through the participation of the public, we discovered 24 new pulsars in our Milky Way, which had previously been missed – and some of them are particularly interesting."

Pulsars are the remnants from explosions of massive stars. They are strongly magnetized and extremely dense neutron stars. They rapidly rotate and emit a beam of radio waves along their magnetic field axis – similar to the spotlight of a lighthouse. If the radio wave beam points towards Earth, the pulsar can be observed.

Large and sensitive radio telescopes are required to discover the weak signals from new pulsars. Knispel and his colleagues analysed data from the Parkes Multi-beam Pulsar Survey, conducted from 1997 to 2001, with the 64-meter antenna of CSIRO's Parkes radio telescope in southeast Australia. "The search for new radio pulsars is very computer intensive. To determine the a priori unknown characteristics of the pulsar, e.g., its distance or its rotation period, we have to very finely comb through wide parameter ranges," says Knispel.

How to Quickly Fix Stuck Orientation on the iPad, iPhone, iPod touch | Educational Technology | Scoop.it

"Every once in a while an iOS device or app will get stuck in the wrong orientation, unresponsive to rotating the device and it either stays in portrait or horizontal mode, despite every effort to rotate the device any which direction. Though this seems to happen more often on the iPad than the iPhone or iPod touch, it can still occur on every iOS device and with just about any app."

I Declare an… iPad Oath - TechChef

I Declare an… iPad Oath - TechChef | Educational Technology | Scoop.it

"So… we have reflected, oriented, and even fostered formative assessment. Think this might be a good time to solemnly declare… an oath. These previous posts (linked above**) have laid the ground work to prepare for a transformative year with mobile devices.

Last year the middle school felt a need to create an iPad Oath that addressed specific classroom behaviors and legislated appropriate use beyond the existing R.U.G. (Responsible Use Guidelines). After reviewing multiple middle school AUP’s and iPad forms online and our own existing elementary iPad Oath, I decided to concoct one of my own using similar ingredients. (The back of the form includes a space for both parent and student signature.)"

Note sure I agree with 'sit at a table or chair'. iPads are great because they make learning mobile. By implementing this rule, you take this away. In my classroom, you see kids scattered around the room and on the veranda outside, sitting where they feel comfortable. We just have a rule that you can't leave the iPad unattended on the floor.
