Hand-written notes or drawings can be a perfect visual supplement to any textual message which you put in your presentation.

This informative slideshow gives you tons of great examples and suggests ideas and methods how you can learn the visual note-taking.

Moodle plugins: Moodle Mobile additional features

Moodle plugins: Moodle Mobile additional features | Educational Technology | Scoop.it

Local plugin for adding new features to the current Moodle Mobile app.

This add-on provides new features and web services which are currently only available in Moodle 2.7.

How it works

Once installed the plugin creates a new service "Moodle Mobile additional features".

The Mobile app checks if this service is enabled. If not, the Mobile app falls backs to the standard core Mobile app service.

Features

* Support for sites using SSO authentication methods (Shibboleth and CAS)

* Push notifications

* Retrieval of private messages and notifications from the site

* Retrieval of calendar events from the site

QR Moodle Orienteering Quiz

A video explaining how I linked QR codes to Moodle Quiz questions to create an orienteering challenge for my students.

Worked pretty well and has lots of potential. Am sure there are lots of improvements I could make next time but the students enjoyed it.

Students used their own phones with free QR readers. The QR codes contained hidden text messages. We are in a rural area with pretty poor reception and wireless coverage.. Students worked in pairs..

Simple Category Themes in Moodle | Anything and everything about eLearning

Simple Category Themes in Moodle | Anything and everything about eLearning | Educational Technology | Scoop.it

When we upgraded to Moodle 2.5 last Summer we decided to give the site a more corporate theme, very similar to the college website and also stop teachers having access to course themes.  Rather than developing a new theme from one of the simpler, standard themes I worked out that the new “Additional CSS” theme options it would be possible to easily modify the “Formal White” theme (using this method it is essential to keep a copy of the CSS in a separate document as a backup).

As I started working with the theme I noticed the wide range of body classes,  but particularly the category-1, category-2 etc classes.  I thought that I could easily personalise each curriculum area and give it its own identity.  We have a nice prospectus with clear, bold colours for each curriculum area and silhouettes so that made it easy to choose colours and styles.  To completely change the appearance of each category required just 2 lines of css for each one, plus an extra line for a category motif.  The simplest way to give a slight 3d gradient on the menu bars was to create a semi transparent png as an overlay.

The code to create this was:

.category-13 .navbar, .category-25 .navbar{background-image:url(“http://moodle.mysite.ac.uk/images/bkg_menu_middle.png”;); background-color: #A7c209;}
.category-13 .block .header .title, .category-25 .block .header .title{background-image:url(“http://moodle.mysite.ac.uk/images/bkg_menu_middle.png”;); background-color: #B6D31A;}
.category-13 #page #page-header #headerlogo:before{content: url(“http://moodle.mysite.ac.uk/images/bg1.gif”;);}

2 Simple Online Badge Generators for making #Openbadges | Anything and everything about eLearning | Educational Technology | Scoop.it

We are trying to encourage more staff to start using Badges in their Moodle courses to motivate students and provide some friendly competition.  Although I love any opportunity to use Photoshop to make something interesting, I know that it’s not really very sustainable.  Luckily there are lots of free services for making attractive badges  easily and quickly.

Using Moodle with Young Pupils and Pupils with Poor Literacy Skills

Moodle is an incredibly versatile virtual learning environment and is widely used in secondary and further education.  Moodle is also a popular virtual learning environment in primary schools, with children as young as four or five years old using it.  Naturally Moodle is going to be used differently with younger pupils or those with poor literacy skills.

Courses will need to be visual and interactive so that it engages your pupils and encourages them to learn outside of the classroom.  Rather than having a lot of text you should try to use audio or video for instructions.  Photographs taken in the classroom are a great visual aid and can be used to lead a discussion at home as to what the pupil did in school today.  This can help a pupil practice their speaking and listening skills and improve their ability to recall an event.  There is a great feature of Moodle called a ‘Label’, which will help you to create an accessible and interactive course for your pupils.

Awesome Moodle Quiz tutorial and guide by the OpenU available on Moodle.net

Awesome Moodle Quiz tutorial and guide by the OpenU available on Moodle.net | Educational Technology | Scoop.it

The Open University is not only the organization pushing the development and innovation of the Quiz Module for Moodle, it’s also recently provided one of the best primers for learning about Moodle’s quiz, the pedagogical theory behind assessment, and showcases the many OU create question types as well. The module is freely available to registered users (and has been posted to Moodle.net), and they estimate about 3 hours to complete it. The conditional release of materials will help to keep you on track.

As a bonus you can also “work along” with the training module to create your own quiz questions on your own Moodle (which is the goal of the tutorial). Check it out at http://www.open.edu/openlearnworks/course/view.php?id=1643

How to implement star-ratings and other ratings in Moodle to support engagement, constructive discourse, and learning

Moodle already has an elaborate, editable, and adaptable grading and rating system built in so the process is relatively simple:Log in to Moodle as an administrator

1. Go to Site administration > Grades > Scales

2. Add a new scale

3. Fill in the Add new scale form, e.g.

   - Name: Stars

   - Scale: ☆☆☆☆☆, ★☆☆☆☆, ★★☆☆☆, ★★★☆☆, ★★★★☆, ★★★★★

   - Description: (optional)

5. Save
