This is a first-hand overview of the author's experiences in an xMOOC with 80,000. Attrition brought this down to half.  Is the glass half empty or brimmingly half full??  This is a useful report on what it's like to engage in xMOOC.

I scooped this here by mistake, though it's still an appropriate posting. But this is why I'm re-re-scooping to http://www.scoop.it/t/edumooc

6 Tips for Making your Online Content Appeal to A Broader Audience | Educational Technology and Sustainability | Scoop.it
Recent research shows that online behavior of low literacy readers is radically different than that of higher-literacy users: they plow text rather than scan it, and they miss page elements due to a narrower field of view. In the video below I will...

The flipped academic: turning higher education on its head

The flipped academic: turning higher education on its head | Educational Technology and Sustainability | Scoop.it
Education models are turning inside out. First came the concept of the 'flipped classroom' in schools: pupils completing course material ahead of lessons to free up time with their teachers and apply the knowledge they have just learned. Now a related philosophy is developing in higher education. Can we also flip academics – or even academia itself?

Alex Bruton, associate professor in innovation and entrepreneurship at Mount Royal University in Canada, thinks so. The 'flipped academic', as he sees it, is an academic who informs first and publishes later, seeking usefulness as well as truth in their research and striving to publish only after having had an impact on students and society.

I love the idea of the flipped academic, "publish only after having had an impact on students and society."  Our current model allows so much stuff to be published that doesn't really have any impact on students or society.  It reminds me of the idea of action research.

UmeaMan's comment, December 11, 2012 8:15 PM
I love the flipped model and I try to introduce it into Chinese K-12 settings, to help headteachers and teachers to implement it.But I found that there are a lot obstacles: such as change courages of teachers, teachers'competencies to create online videos, students' self-regulation etc. Do you have any suggestions and advices? Thanx.

10 Ways To Use Technology To Teach Writing

10 Ways To Use Technology To Teach Writing | Educational Technology and Sustainability | Scoop.it

Both high-tech innovations for learning and the inability of many schoolchildren to write well have been major talking points in educational circles for quite some time, but oddly enough, one may offer a solution to helping remedy the other.

There are a variety of tech tools and methods out there for teaching writing that can make the process easier and more fun for both teachers and students. While not every high-tech way of teaching writing will work for every class or every student, there’s enough variety that there’s bound to be something for everyone.

Here are a few tech-focused ways to help students learn grammar, essay-writing, and, most importantly, why good writing is so important to their futures.

Segundo eles, a grande solução é a educação.

Our cause is just, our intention is pure. We aim to educate. So we focus on what we want to teach our learners, and that’s where we can go right off the rails. Because it’s not about us, it’s about them.

Classroom Questioning: What Type Do You Use Most?

Cultures of Thinking and Ron Ritchhart

Questioning is a vital part of thinking, teaching and learning.  We need to consider the purpose of every activity our students engage in while always looking to build higher level questioning into the daily routine.

Generative:  Exploring the topic

• Authentic questions or wonders that teacher doesn’t know the answer to.

• Essential questions that initiate exploration of a topic

Constructive:  Building New Understanding

• Extending & Interpreting

• Connecting & Linking

• Orienting and focusing on big ideas, central concepts, or purpose

• Evaluating

Facilitative:  Promotes the learner’s own thinking & understanding

• Requesting elaboration, reasons, evidence, justification

• Generating discussion among the class to hear different perspectives

• Clarifying and Uncovering
