Teachers Flip for 'Flipped Learning' Class Model

Teachers Flip for 'Flipped Learning' Class Model | Educational_Resources_Technologies | Scoop.it

When Timmy Nguyen comes to his pre-calculus class, he's already learned the day's lesson — he watched it on a short online video prepared by his teacher for homework.

So without a lecture to listen to, he and his classmates at Segerstrom Fundamental High School spend class time doing practice problems in small groups, taking quizzes, explaining the concept to other students, reciting equation formulas in a loud chorus, and making their own videos while teacher Crystal Kirch buzzes from desk to desk to help pupils who are having trouble.

CERT's insight:

I would also suggest taking a look at the Khan Academy (http://www.khanacademy.org/) to see how the flipped classroom can actually work in a curricular setting. The Khan Academy website has thousands of videos to choose from for teaching and learning.

John Dalziel's curator insight, May 13, 1:05 PM

Spell Up is a new word game and Chrome Experiment that helps learners improve their English using their voice—and a modern browser, of course.
It’s like a virtual spelling bee, with a twist.
Spell Up is both fun and educational.
The goal of the game is for users to correctly spell the words they hear and stack them to build the highest word tower they can...
   - letter by letter,
   - word by word.
The higher the tower gets, the more difficult the word challenges:
They’ll be asked to...
   - pronounce words correctly,
   - solve word jumbles and
   - guess mystery words.

They can earn bonuses and coins to level up faster.

Spell Up works best in Chrome on a computer and on Android phones and tablets. (It also works on iPhones and iPads, but they’ll need to type rather than talk.)
Whether they’re just learning English or they’re already a pro, check it out!

And if you’re a practitioner, I'd encourage you to try it out in your learning environments.

VISUAL LITERACY

Peter Evans's curator insight, November 26, 2013 8:47 AM

I'd suggest a lot of the more innovative university programmes are already doing much of what is suggested here. One thing to emphasise is supporting students to use digital tools specifically for learning as they generally already know how to use these tools. In otherwords, while students may often be digitally competent, they are often less digitally literate in terms of learning processes. Also, what refer to PDAs - surely old tech?

Miep Carstensen's curator insight, December 1, 2013 11:14 PM

Sound advice for teachers to incorprate these core competencies in their teaching programmes.

Microsoft’s Office Online is a completely free, web-based version of Microsoft Office.

This online office suite is clearly competing with Google Drive, but it’s also a potential replacement for the desktop version of Office.
Unlike all of Microsoft’s other Office products, Office Online at office.com is completely free.
This is Office Online’s biggest advantage over desktop versions of Microsoft Office.

It  can be used on all the PCs you want without paying for additional boxed copies or subscribing to Office 365, Microsoft’s subscription service for Office.
Because it’s a web application that runs in your browser, Office Online will run on everything, from Linux PCs and Chromebooks to iPads and Android tablets.

It doesn't require any special plug-in and works in any popular browser, including Firefox, Chrome, and Safari — not just Internet Explorer.
Should you use Office Online?

Well, that’s up to you. If you’d like a completely free version of Office it’s a compelling option.

On the other hand, you may need the more advanced features in the desktop version of Office.
NOTE: it does provide access to learners who can't afford the desktop version of office.

Andy Kenworthy's curator insight, February 27, 6:21 AM

This could be very handy for editing documents on the move when a desktop or laptop running the full suite isn't available and for collaborating with a team. I will be looking in to this further.

CERT's insight:

Bloom's Digital Taxonomy isn't about the tools or technologies rather it is about using these to facilitate learning.
For instance outcomes on rubrics are measured by competence of use and most importantly the quality of the process or product.
Bookmarking a resource is of no value if the resource is inappropriate, invalid, out of date or inaccurate.
Bloom's Digital Taxonomy lends itself to problem and project based learning where the student must work through the entire process of development and evaluation. The 21st Century Fluency Projects 6D model for Solution Fluency is an excellent example of how to work through the project or problem based learning frame work.

Some teachers still think of technology as "the future of classrooms", however, these innovations are already playing an important role in education.
