Change management is in full-force across all industries, yet many leaders are unprepared to act upon and operationalize the requirements for change to avoid business disruption. For many organizations, preparedness begins at the top and this means that leadership – across all levels – must have absolute clarity in purpose and focus; there also must be alignment in strategic philosophy and resolution goals.

Unfortunately, many organizations are slow to change as the internal politics makes it difficult to reach consensus across all levels of leadership – even when the necessity for change is urgent. This is why many companies unknowingly lose momentum as they fail to change fast enough -- allowing the marketplace and competitors to pass them by. The result: valuable time is misspent, resources applied and money invested without the required outcomes to stay competitive, keep clients satisfied and employees engaged.

Daniel Goleman, in his article “Leadership That Gets Results”, has identified six different leadership styles, and he believes that good leaders will adopt one of these six styles to meet the needs of different situations.

 

None of the six leadership styles by Daniel Goleman are right or wrong – each may be appropriate depending on the specific context. Whilst one of the more empathetic styles is most likely to be needed to build long-term commitment, there will be occasions when a commanding style may need to be called upon, for example, when a rapid and decisive response is required.

Leaders must take more time to stop, reflect and assess their own thinking, capabilities and aptitudes. 

 

 

(From the article): As leaders, you must begin to look beyond the obvious and open your eyes to see the opportunities previous unseen.   Leadership requires you to have circular vision and when you begin to grow complacent, you only see the obvious details before you – rather than those they lie around, beneath and beyond what you seek.  In fact, your mindset becomes stagnate because you are not stretching your perspectives enough to see more than you want to.

 

When you fall into this trap, it’s time to reshuffle the deck, and map out the internal and external factors that are influencing your thinking. You must begin to identify areas that can be improved –  such as relationships, workshop culture, networking, how you are investing in yourself (or lack thereof), etc.

 

It’s not experience, but rather opportunity that is the true mother of success.   Be more mindful about how you manage opportunity before it begins to manage you.

The first lesson is a good place to begin. We become so busy we do not look up and from side-to-side. Leaders need to be present and aware of what is happening and not happening. They need to be aware of who is best served to take the reins in a given situation.

 

In School, leadership and management should be intertwined. Quite often, I found that the latter was used almost exclusively and leadership did not exist.

(From the article) The Blind CC. Imagine this . . . Someone sends an email to a group and bcc’s someone. Then the bcc’er replies to all, not noticing that they were blind-copied. If you were on the To: or CC: lines, wouldn’t you immediately wonder why the other person was bcc’d to start with? And more importantly, wouldn’t you start to wonder how many times the original person sends emails to you and they are bcc’ing someone else? We all want leaders who are transparent, authentic and genuine – and it seems to me that using the bcc flies in the face of that goal. There might be a time to email something separately to someone and give them additional information or perspective, but why make it a blind copy leaving everyone at risk for miscommunication and misunderstanding?

These days, "trust", "authentic" and "genuine" seem to be turning into buzz words. This though provoking article leads us to look beyond the current culture and examine our actions.

 

From the article:

 

In the end, the other person decides if you are worthy of their trust based on their view of your intent, not your actual intent.

 

One way to read this would be to nod your head and agree, thinking about the people these behaviors remind you of.

 

A much better way to read this would be to reflect on how those behaviors impacted your trust and relationship with those people and then ask yourself the harder question – how often am I compromising trust by doing these things or things like them?

The typical process with both assessments/performance reviews and coaching is to use each independently. The former becomes an annual event tied more to reward rather than growth, and the latter becomes a tool for "developmental" situations (a poor euphemism for low performance).

As you can see, the wheel outlines a wide variety of verbs and activities related to each thinking level of Blooms taxonomy coupled with iPad apps that go with it. These apps are supposed to help teachers and students better cultivate these different thinking levels in their use of iPad apps.
