Ivon Prefontaine's insight:

The use of digital technology is one form of being in the world. It is not the only way. If we only use a hammer, then everything begins to look like a nail. We need a mindful approach in the selection and use of the tools we want to use for a particular activity. Is it the right tool for this student, for this activity, for this context, etc? Those are key questions.

AASA :: Our View: The Limited Use of Technology in Teachers’ Hands | Educational Leadership and Technology | Scoop.it
Ivon Prefontaine's insight:

There is no such thing as a tool, and that is what technology is, that is one-size-fits-all. We need to ask ourselves and others new and more mindful questions. My experience is the use of technology is faddish. What is the latest new toy? This is an approach that is frustrating for the faux educational leadership of our times and for classroom teachers. What if we talked and listened mindfully and attentively to each other?

A reason kids are not ready is due to the hyper-connectivity, the busyness of their lives, and little to just be alive. We need to rethink the role and use of digital technologies in our schools, classrooms, and in human lives. Can we develop mindful practices around technology?

Kenneth Mikkelsen's comment, April 10, 2013 7:57 PM
Ivon, I think in an increasingly transparent world the key issue is integrity. You need to establish yourself and your reputation on a solid and honest foundation. Becoming the "go-to-person" in the future is all about relevance and leading an open dialogue.

Online Teacher Emergency | Educational Leadership and Technology | Scoop.it
When an online teacher encounters eighth graders who don't know much about online technologies, she has to find out what the ARE good at.
Ivon Prefontaine's insight:

We assume that our students all like digital technology. That is like assuming that all so-called 'digital immigrants' do not have the same or better skills with technology than the students. This is not as simple as the article makes it out to be. What is the right tool? That is an essential question. We need to teach skills and allow students to be able to use a variety of tools because they are adaptable with their skills.

Ana Cristina Pratas's curator insight, April 8, 2013 4:44 PM

Are universities mostly sorting devices to separate smart and hard-working high school students from their less-able fellows so that employers can more easily identify them? Are universities factories for the dissemination of job skills? Are universities mostly boot camps for adulthood, where young people learn how to drink moderately, fornicate meaningfully and hand things in on time?

Everything I Know About Social Media I Learned In Kindergarten

Former kindergarten teacher Angela Maiers offers social media lessons we can all learn from kindergarten students.
Ivon Prefontaine's insight:

This is a great way to approach all learning. Ken Robinson spoke about the stamping out of creativity as children move through school. Yes, young children can be creative and see the world through eyes of wonder or, as Buddhists say: "With a beginner's mind'" and we need that in our learners. We also need to make sure the tool is the right one for the child, the task, the learning, and the context. It is not always a digital tool.
