I take a digital sabbath on a weekly basis. The article is not written by Goleman but makes reference to him as a supporter of the need for disconnection at times.

All three need to be used when necessary. Even in a world with high levels of connectivity, we need someone to occasionally explain the why and what behind our learning and learning remains a socially constructed process. We learn most richly with others which brings us around to connection.

These are not necessarily the best app for the job and many of the apps can be used in different realms but it is a good start. Thanks Jeff. BTW you might also be interested in the podcast episode I did with Prof Geoff Scott of the Uni of Western Sydney. He has done years of research into graduate capabilities (aka values or attributes) It is fascinating stuff in the context of Technology Enhanced Learning and Teaching. This is what the respective industries in the market place want in graduates. Duh! Look at the list and ask yourself are they being developed instudents from HE or in education in general ... this is why mapping is so important. Are we equipping graduates to excel and make a difference .... hmmm! Have a look and listen to http://tinyurl.com/alsltblog. "If you exercise these capabilities ... you will be employed!" This sort of stuff makes the CAMERA method worth developing don't you think? regards Allan

Learning basic digital skills through use of a network is somewhat of a contradiction.  Hence, I have commented on Siemens’s key principles in the context of this most fundamental learning in a networked world.  In the developing world, the most basic of digital skills (keyboard, mouse, logging on etc.) have to be learned before more valuable skills (searching, publishing) can be developed.

  • Learning and knowledge rests in diversity of opinions.

A non-networked person will have been exposed to only a narrow range of opinions. Hence the acquisition of digital skills is an essential precursor to accessing a diversity of opinions. It is no surprise that repressive regimes limit access to diversity of information.

  • Learning is a process of connecting specialised nodes or information sources.

However, a more fundamental learning is that of understanding that such sources exist and how to find them.
