Heutagogy: designing for self-directed learners #education

Heutagogy: designing for self-directed learners #education | Personal [e-]Learning Environments | Scoop.it
While acknowledging that the whole concept of self-determination – or ‘Google
learning’ as it has been called, pejoratively, in certain circles – is fraught with the potential for missing the point, being distracted into rabbit warrens or just getting bad information, we would like to emphasise that this is only a potential.

===> Any learning theory is only as good as the way in which it is applied and worked through, and we have seen it produce highly successful results where correctly applied, in the right circumstances. <===

Watch this space for chapter and verse, as we will soon be publishing case studies of several recent programmes that feature high levels of learner self-direction.

Learners are changing, learning is changing – and heutagogy can give important clues about rebalancing the burden of responsibilities and permissions in an always-on, networked, instructorless, post-course world.

The Maker Movement and the Rebirth of Constructionism - Hybrid Pedagogy

The Maker Movement and the Rebirth of Constructionism - Hybrid Pedagogy | Personal [e-]Learning Environments | Scoop.it
The culmination of my quest for more powerful learning grounded in theory and research came when recently I conducted an experiment in pushing constructionism into the digital age.

Constructionism is based on two types of construction. First, it asserts that learning is an active process, in which people actively construct knowledge from their experience in the world. People don’t get ideas; they make them. This aspect of construction comes from the constructivist theory of knowledge development by Jean Piaget. To Piaget’s concept, Papert added another type of construction, arguing that people construct new knowledge with particular effectiveness when they are engaged in constructing personally meaningful products.

Imagine my surprise and joy when I realized that I had arrived at constructionism prior to knowing that such a theory even existed. I believe that thousands of other educators are unknowingly working within the constructionist paradigm as well. Although many within the Maker movement are aware that it has it’s roots in constructionism, the movement is gaining impressive momentum without the majority of Makers realizing that there is a strong theoretical foundation behind their work.

After I came to understand this connection between my practices and the supporting theoretical framework I was better able to focus and refine my practice. Even more importantly, I felt more confident and powerful in forging ahead with further experiments in the learning situations I design for my learners.

It also touches the topic of assistance for victims, with a special focus on online assistance. It contains a list of helplines operating in the European network under the Safer Internet Programme of the European Commission. The resource is complemented with 23 practical exercises that can be used in school or in youth work.

Since the handbook has been created in the framework of a EU Daphne III project in cooperation with partners from Belgium, ===>  it is available in 4 language versions: English, German, French and Dutch. <===

The Ultimate Guide to Using Tags and Hashtags Effectively

The Ultimate Guide to Using Tags and Hashtags Effectively | Personal [e-]Learning Environments | Scoop.it
Researching the right keywords, expressions, tags and hashtags is more essential than ever. Here's a detailed guide to using them to your advantage.

Ultimately, tags and hashtags have the same purpose – to make you findable on websites loaded with content and to draw people’s attention to whatever it is you want them to see. As I always advocate, however, it’s about relevancy.

.

Both tags and hashtags play their role in the SEO of your website and content, because they are strongly related to the core keywords your website and organization are based on. Keywords with the right tags built upon them will ensure the long-term drive of relevant traffic to your website.

.

Hashtags will keep your content appearing in relevant popular streams.

The Importance Of Intrinsic Motivation In Transforming Learning

Giving teachers and students as much autonomy as possible in choosing their own curricular material is another way that we can improve student engagement.

Only students who are intrinsically motivated to be engaged in school will end up truly challenged, enriched, energized and ultimately fulfilled by their experience. Yes it’s an ideal, but it’s worth keeping in mind.

Sharrock's comment, May 1, 2014 11:54 AM
You should take a look at this link: http://www.maccoby.com/Articles/4Rs_Of_Motivation.shtml. Maccoby states there is a mix of extrinsic and intrinsic rewards: "mix of four Rs: Responsibilities, Relationships, Rewards, Reasons". Maccoby's paragraph on responsibilities focuses on the intrinsics--"People are motivated when their responsibilities are meaningful and engage their abilities and values." Meaning is something personal, ie intrinsic. He also discussed personal challenges when he said, "Craftsmen are motivated by the challenge to produce high–quality products." I liken this to an artist's aesthetics for creating art.
In his section on "Relationships", I wonder if the quality of a relationship is an extrinsic reward/acknowledgement or intrinsic or a mixture of both.
In the part about "Rewards", he does the most exploration of extrinsic rewards, namely about "pay", but he also states, "However, Jönsson finds that 80–85 percent of people who receive recognition for a job well done are satisfied even if it is not monetary, compared to 45–50 percent of those who are not recognized for their work." Which is along the lines of what I was saying about acknowledgements. They are more highly valued, but still extrinsic.
Finally, in his section "Reasons", Maccoby notes, "Jönsson reports that Chinese workers are especially motivated because they have a sense that they work not only for themselves, but also for their country. They feel proud of being part of a winning team that is building a powerful economy. According to Jönsson, in China more than in the West, workers are interested in and aware of their company’s vision, and they see their own work in this larger context." This again is mixing intrinsics and extrinsics.
Sharrock's comment, May 1, 2014 11:55 AM
If you relate "grades" to pay, it really doesn't matter. Pay only matters when the 4 Rs are inadequate or dissatisfying. Grades are not the problem just as salary is not usually the problem.
