Children, Teens, and Reading | Common Sense Media | Educational Discourse | Scoop.it

"This research review charts trends in reading rates and reading achievement over time among kids and teens in the U.S. We focus on national surveys and databases for data on children's reading habits and reading scores, looking at differences across time, and between demographic groups. We also examine the growing literature on ereading among young people, which has largely studied attitudes toward ebooks and ereading. We conclude with a discussion of key future areas of research on reading and ereading. "

6 Ways Social Media Will Change In 2014 - Edudemic

6 Ways Social Media Will Change In 2014 - Edudemic | Educational Discourse | Scoop.it

This is an older post from edudemic but it highlights some of the key discussions that are taking place in education. For each of these, digital citizenship is a key component as everyone, teachers, students, parents and the public are navigating these different paths, sometimes for the very first time. Digital Citizenship is an integral part of helping others to navigate these different paths. Helping people develop these skills is not only important for their online interactions but, as with some of the skills, also developing face-to-face skills that are key in building relationships, solving problems, working with other people, and socializing. For those who don't use social media, #1 will reign supreme. If you're not already on the social media train, 2014 will be the year to hop on. If you've already been riding the train, check out #2-6 to see what the trends are expected to be!

A Call To Educators and Edtech Get Connected (EdSurge News)

A Call To Educators and Edtech Get Connected (EdSurge News) | Educational Discourse | Scoop.it
Being “connected” gets tossed around a lot these days, usually referring to educators connecting to other educators through social media. But “connection” isn’t just about educator-to-educator development. Another imperative connection must be built: connecting educators to those who build education
Kelly Christopherson's insight:

Being connected is important as an educator. But it's also important to be connected as a person and share what we know and what we are doing with more than just other educators.

How we will learn
Kelly Christopherson's insight:

Creativity - where does it come from? On most days as I try to write something, I wish I knew more about what allows others to write and be creative. I mean, I have a hard time drawing stick people, can't play an instrument, and don't sing anywhere but the shower. Yet, I spent years helping people pick colours for rooms in their houses, can rearrange a room/space - seeing it as it could look and what those options mean for space & flow. And, when I quit worrying about "just one more article", I can string a few lines together. So, what makes us creative? How can we help students be more creative? This article from Mindshift helps to begin to explain this very thing.

Kelly Christopherson's insight:

I've been doing a great deal of reading and thinking about digital citizenship. One of the main ideas that I keep thinking about is that digital citizenship, and to an even larger degree citizenship,  it is about connections. As individuals, we are able to connect in so many ways and those connections can lead to more connections, some stronger than others. This article about connectivism helps to begin to explain connectivism as a learning theory.
