What should a school be?

What should a school be? | Educational Discourse | Scoop.it

Actions Speak's curator insight, October 18, 2013 9:26 AM

Isn't what schools should be determined by what the vision is for their impact?

Isn't providing the fundamental education for all students to have the necessary skills to pursue their interests and maximize their talents more important than everything focused on the adults, unions, special interested, inhibiting bureaucracies, etc?

Isn't providing an approach that engages students in their interest areas and differentiates their learning opportunites bases on upon their current skill level and those interests part of the key to lighting a fire for their initiative, accountability, and success?

Leaders are supposed to lead.  Isn't is time to hold education leaders and bureaucrats accountable for measureable performance and effective use of funds?

Isn't it time to quit rewarding failure, protecting the unacceptable, and ignoring the benefit of frequent, relevant measurements?

Isn't is time to make a vision for public education crystal clear and keep that vision focused on effective learning?

The Power of Brands: a 67000% Return in One Day & 3 Tips to Make your Personal Brand the Next Apple | Educational Discourse | Scoop.it
I’m a child of Descartes. I grew up in a rational world where logical thinking was the best weapon against ignorance, the right way out of dogma, and I still think today that it’s a decent objective.
Kelly Christopherson's insight:

In educaiton, we need to focus on #3. We need to develop ourselves our brand, as educators. You need to "demonstrate your thought leadership, tell your story, give love freely and give good reasons to be loved." This is very much in tune with "Swithch" by Chip and Dan Heath. It's not about the profit, it's about connections.

The EDTech industry is yet in its infancy and is expected to grow cumulatively at the rate of 23 percent in the next five years. It is anticipated to be a $255 billion global business in the next 5 years (by 2017) as per GSV Advisors.
Kelly Christopherson's insight:

As an educator, you may feel you don't need to pay attention to the upcoming tech trends. But, by looking, it may keep you from constantly reacting to being proactive - where might this take me? It's less stressful to be thinking ahead than constantly reacting.

We asked 15 successful young entrepreneurs to share their go-to yet underrated app of choice.
Kelly Christopherson's insight:

There are a few of these apps that people involved in education should  investigate. I am especially interested in Lift especially when it comes to the small things that matter, CloudMagic because all my storage is in the cloud, Brook - to streamline my twitter feed and Full to follow my goals. There are a few, like Refresh, that I would use when looking at potential hirings and WinStreak just sounds like a great way to look at the positive - it might be the one I look at first!

Great infographic/graph that shows " the digital tools that are transforming innovation. Our results show that at the development phase, productivity tools have reached maturity—most are widely used and effective. In other phases, particularly the front end of the innovation process, companies are experimenting with new marketing and customer insight tools that have game-changing potential." I find the Ideaion and Development are very interesting in relation to educaiton. I found this at http://itsaboutlearning.wordpress.com. Great share!
