How to Use Evernote to Build Student Digital Portfolios - Global Digital Citizenship Foundation | Educational Discourse | Scoop.it
Every year, students create awesome projects for school which they and their parents are extremely proud of. Be it a media project, a class presentation, or a musical performance, these are things that any parent would want to cherish and that any student would love to revisit. They are personal documents of growth, and testaments to our kids’ genius.

If only they could bring their best projects with them to a job or college interview, or keep them around to show their own children. Enter student digital portfolios, a way to encapsulate all of the best of your child’s work to share with anyone who might be interested.

We’re going to walk you through getting started with Evernote, and then once you get your feet wet, you can explore other options.

No Student Is Unreachable: 4 Strategies To Reach Students That Don't Seem To Want To Be Reached
Kelly Christopherson's insight:

As educators, we sometimes get caught up with the actions of students and miss little things that could help us to connect with students. Relationships are not easy and in the fast-paced hectic schedule focused environment of schools, they sometimes become secondary to some of the other demands that teachers face. The article is a good reminder that, if we pay attention, no student is unreachable.

While many Americans are scared, overwhelmed or confused by the Internet and the technology evolving around them, they can’t imagine their lives without it. This survey shows people recognize the importance of improving their software skills and staying safe on the web, and are motivated to master new skills and make themselves more digitally literate.

.

However, they are discouraged by time and cost restrictions, not knowing where to turn for help and feeling too embarrassed to admit inadequacies—even though they know these skills could help improve their lives.

To Advance Education, We Must First Reimagine Society

To Advance Education, We Must First Reimagine Society | Educational Discourse | Scoop.it
Why haven't education reform efforts amounted to much? Because they start with the wrong problem, says John Abbott, director of the 21st Century Learning Initiative. Overhauling the educational paradigm means replacing the metaphor — the concept of the world and its inhabitants as machine-like entities — that has shaped the education system, as well as many other aspects of our culture.

Kelly Christopherson's insight:

Overhauling the educational paradigm means replacing the metaphor - the concept of the world and its inhabitants as machine-like entities - John Abbott. Changing schools may mean making adults uncomfortable with the way they fit within in the system and their role in the process of learning. It's no longer a delivery system - it's a change system.

The article points out hard truths. One is about training/indoctrinating students as consumers. It is similar to the thinking Bernard Stiegler, Gert Biesta, Bill Pinar, etc. have argued in various ways about schooling.

While most schools take steps to protect students at school & schools are considering setting policies that apply to students’ activities outside of school.
Kelly Christopherson's insight:

It's important to move from a "build a wall to keep things out" focus when it comes to students and technology and move toward a "teach them to be safe in the world". Giving students tools, strategies, options and support as they learn is vital in a world that is digital in so many different ways.
