5 Simple Tools For Teachers To Create And Publish Apps Of Their Own - TeachThought

5 Simple Tools For Teachers To Create And Publish Apps Of Their Own - TeachThought | Educational | Scoop.it

"What with the almost universal proliferation of smartphones among students, even at the elementary school level, it would seem like a no-brainer for an educator to utilize mobile apps as effective and readily-accepted learning tools. And if an educator can’t find an app that does exactly what he or she wants, the logical next step is to develop and publish their own. Besides, what else do they have to do with all the free time with which all educators are blessed?"

Word of the Week "Moral Compass": Meditate on this Phrase

Word of the Week "Moral Compass": Meditate on this Phrase | Educational | Scoop.it

These two words used together are important – very important.  In the legal profession, we must use a moral compass because we meet people who have lost their way.  We have to make sure, at all time, that we do not head in the wrong direction also.

Take time to meditate about the meaning of the word “moral compass” to you.

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, August 20, 6:04 PM

I am unsure that moral compass is a device. A compass is, but thinking of morals in an instrumental way, even metaphorically, misses the point. Having said this, the article makes good points. We communicate morals through our words, actions, thoughts, etc. It is communicating that is important.

Teachers communicate all the time. We should consider what that means to the learning of others.

"It’s May, time for teachers to revisit their bookshelves and think about summer reading selections. This year, I’m considering a different kind of summer reading for my kids, books that will inspire them to head outside and make, do and create. My younger son, Finn, likes these sorts of projects, and while I can provide him with scrap lumber, nails, a drill and some screws, he and I wanted to find some additional inspiration.

Technology Makes Reading Better. Here's Exactly How. - Te@chThought

Technology Makes Reading Better. Here's Exactly How. - Te@chThought | Educational | Scoop.it

"Reading is just the communication of ideas through alphanumeric symbols. I’m not sure what this represents such hallowed ground for teachers, but it does. Personally I’d be more concerned with reading habits, reasons for reading, the quality of reading materials, etc. Symbols change, forms change, media change. See the gif animations that demonstrate how a student feels when “bae won’t respond to them.” This is your audience, and these are the symbols they gravitate towards.

In the apps-for-close-reading post, I said that this “interaction” between reader and text during close reading “doesn’t require technology, but can be changed by it.” So it made sense, I thought, to guess at some ways this happens. Or should be happening, anyway.

With more personalization, more access, and more connectivity, we should be creating a generation of close-readers that can’t get enough. So if we’re not, the question is, why isn’t that happening? The pieces are there."

Monique Markoff says: "Some would say in this model the teachers matter less since computers are taking over some of the instruction. But I actually think teachers matter more in this model. They are now the orchestrators of these complex learning paths, picking which program should go for which student. They have to now target all the skills that the computer can’t do.  How to motivate that child. How to connect what they’re doing to their home life."

Brian Romero Smith's curator insight, May 17, 2:53 PM

You've heard of Blended Learning strategies by now along with all the other technology driven methods available. What this particle TED talk focuses on is building a model that encourages student led learning using technology, while the teacher serves as the motivator, and your guide for exploring the student's learning potential. The most important aspect however when trying to implement a Blended learning model,  is being flexible in its delivery and outcomes.  As there are many ways to  build your platform, just keep your students at the forefront of your decision making in order to Meet Them Where They Are.

The 8 Key Elements Of Digital Literacy - Edudemic

The 8 Key Elements Of Digital Literacy - Edudemic | Educational | Scoop.it

Many teachers have added ‘digital literacy’ as number four on the list of literacies their students should have (or be working towards, in most cases). Reading, writing, and math are now followed by digital literacy. Obviously, depending on the grade level  you teach, your students will have different abilities in each of the four areas, so your expectations and your teaching approach may differ quite noticeably from your colleagues. But the nagging question still remains for many teachers – what exactly is digital literacy?
