"Ahh, in service. Whether it is at the beginning of the school year, end of the school year, or smack dab in the middle of the school year…it seems like there is never a good time for school-wide in service.

 

Part of the problem I had with in service as a teacher is that it never seemed “worth my time” to sit and listen to someone from district administration talk, go through powerpoint slides, and share out the new initiative our state was planning on doing to ramp up student achievement.

 

On the flip side, my cynicism usually melted away (almost immediately) when another teacher was presenting, sharing, or leading us during an in service time. In fact, when I look back at my most valuable learning experiences as a teacher, they are almost always with colleagues and other teachers, instead of with an administrator or consultant or presenter.

 

Flash forward a couple years and now I’m in an administrative role, planning in services and realizing just how hard it is to plan an in service that is meaningful, relevant, and worthwhile to our teachers’ time. Yet, every time I’ve had teachers lead an in service or professional development session at my district, it seems to have a positive impact on everyone."

We have, however, recently expanded upon our Makerspace offerings thanks to being inspired by several of my librarian friends in our amazing #TLChat PLN! Kids can come in during lunch or when they've finished their work to explore, craft, and create in the Library Media Center.


I re-purposed 4 empty study carrels for this Makerspace center at the top corner of our library.  The grouping includes a Lego Creation Station, a Duct Tape Craft Cubby, and a Makey Makey Coding Corner."

I'm not sure if I believe everything this video stated, however I think it is a good topic to analyze. I think it would be interesting to see how the rich countries became rich. They can't just have started on top. I also believe the rich countries abuse the poor countries because we can get goods/minerals/just about anything for a small price and then sell it in the rich country for much more.

...certainly privilege from times past when there were no international watchdogs comes into play, but even when we control for colonialism, certain countries do much better than others. I'm inclined to think like Jared Diamond (The World Until Yesterday) and David Landes (The Wealth and Poverty of Nations. 1998) that institutions matter. If we protect property, provide vertical institutional support while also making room in the shadow of the law for ad hoc cooperation (see Elinor Ostrom's work), and protect intellectual property rights, we tend to have more wealth developed.

7 mitos y realidades sobre la formación online.

 

Mito nro. 1, no se puede obtener un empleo acreditando un diploma logrado mediante aprobación de cursos en línea.  Reaalidad: 62% de los profesionales de RRHH creen que los diplomas obtenidos por cursos online son equivalentes o mejores que los logrados en universidades tradicionales.

 

Mito nro 2, sólo universidades de dudosa reputación ofrecen programas que se imparten totalmente en línea. Realidad: el porcentaje de instituciones que ofrecen programas completamente virtuales se ha duplicado en la última década hasta alcanzar 62.4%.

 

Mito nro. 3, los programas virtuales contribuyen con el aislamiento de sus estudiantes. Realidad: los cursos distribuídos en el formato presencial tradicional pueden también incentivar el aislamiento.

 

Mito nro. 4, obtener un diploma en línea es tomar el camino fácil. Realidad: si bien es cierto que el formato eLearning es más flexible, ello no significa que los cursos dictados en ésta modalidad sean menos rigurosos.

 

Mito nro. 5, "Tengo todo el tiempo del mundo para culminar mi curso online". Realidad: si intenta retrazar indefinidamente el cumplimiento de las tareas asignadas en un curso online, muy problamente, no superá ese curso. La procastinación no funciona el mundo real ni en el virtual.

 

Mito nro. 6, usted no aprenderá mucho tomando cursos vía eLearning. Realidad: investigaciones recientes indican que no hay diferencias significativas entre los resultados de aprendizaje por estudios virtuales y el método presencial tradicional.

 

Mito nro. 7, puedo hacer fraude en los programas de formación online. Realidad: muchas escuelas online han implementado sistemas de protección antifraude. Algunas otras exigen la realización de exámenes presenciales a sus alumnos. ¡ El gran hermano siempre está observando...!

Every child deserves the opportunity to shine, whether academically, through the arts, in sports or via community service. School districts throughout our country work to fulfill their mission to provide these opportunities, first by offering the most robust curriculum possible. Financial strains, however, can often limit extracurricular activities. Yet we can all remember from our own experience that schools, at their best, provide an array of performing and visual arts programming and a wide variety of sports and community service clubs.

Whether you're trying to come up with new lesson plan ideas or new blog post ideas, at some point we all feel our creative energy sag. One of the ways that I get my creative juices flowing again is to go for a long walk, a hike, a bike ride, or paddle down a river. I emphasize long because a quick 15 minute lunch time walk doesn't do it. I have to get outside for an extended time, at least an hour, to let my mind really wander. When my mind wanders it can come up with some interesting ideas.
