I chose this article because it explores ways to mitigate adversity and nourish personal stregnth such as:

*developing caring relationships

*setting high expectations

*creating opportunities to participatate and contribute

This supports the importance of developing "soft skills" in leaders to help them become effective.

Resilience is believing in what you do and even when it gets so hard and you feel so defeated, you just don’t give up. It is believing that you can rise above and achieve something in the face of disaster, disappointment and struggle. Resilience is needed in education or you will not survive. Each day you spend in school building, you carry the hopes and dreams of your students. You also carry their tragedies and trauma. Why do we do this every day over and over again? Because we are believers. We are resilient and we know we hold the potential to change lives and promote success in all of our students.

This post discusses how big data is impacting education. In the discussion on big data the following question is raised: "How can we make our students (especially those online students) more successful? (In other words, retention, retention, retention.)" As she learned more about big data she wondered what happened to the human side of the equation, "the caring."

Although this article looks at online learning the words of the Dalai Lama ring true for all of us as educators. Read through them and see what you think. Almost 25 years ago, I wrote a widely-read and discussed paper that was entitled: “A True Test: Toward More Authentic and Equitable Assessment” that was published in the Phi Delta Kappan. I believe the phrase was my coining, made when I worked with Ted Sizer at the Coalition of Essential Schools, as a way of describing “true” tests as opposed to merely academic and unrealistic school tests. I first used the phrase in print in an article for Educational Leadership entitled “Teaching to the (Authentic) Test” in the April 1989 issue.

This article offers great insight into what authentic assessment is. It was very helpful in telling me precisely what authentic assessment is and how it can be used in the classroom. The author’s main point is that many people and educators have ruined the meaning of authentic assessment so he wants to clear the air and be very direct with his definition of authentic assessment. It will certainly try to implement authentic assessment into my classroom and teaching. Authentic assessment is much needed in our “standardized testing world.” If a teacher uses authentic assessment right they can help their students more fully and deeply understand the material they are being assessed on as well as grow in many “real world” skills. Authentic assessment provides a way in which students can take ownership of what they have learned and how they can apply it.

What can we do to help students learn and to provide teachers more time to work with students? How can technology play a role in this? To answer these questions the post discusses a book by Daniel Willingham, "Why Don't Students Like School."

The authors state that the book can be boiled down to this statement: "Students don’t like school because school isn’t set up to help them learn very well." As the days of the one-room school house shifted due to the Industrial Revolution classes moved from small multi-age groups to larger groups based on age and that has not changed significantly. Differentiation is discussed but it is not always easy to differentiate in a classroom with 25 or more students, and today we are told we must personalize education to meet the needs of each student.

One way we may be able to meet this need is with the use of "adaptive learning software." This post continues to explore some of the pros and cons of this.

There are some schools that are using adaptive software with success, and Carpe Diem-Meridian, a public school in Indianapolis. Click through to the post to learn more.
