Defining Geography: What is Where, Why There, and Why Care?

Defining Geography: What is Where, Why There, and Why Care? | Educational | Scoop.it
One reason why geography has languished in the curricula of many American schools is that so few people understand the nature of the discipline or its relevance to our everyday lives. What is geography? What is its unique perspective? What do geographers do? Why is geography important? Why should we teach (and learn) geography in the schools? These are questions that have gone largely unanswered in American education. This brief essay presents an easily taught, understood, and remembered definition of geography.

Yes, and YES!!! Critical thinking really takes risk, because someone is likely to disagree with you. How much better it is, however, to have a well thought opinion and stand alone, than to be a lemming.

A really excellent article on something that can be hard to define and practice, and yet is such an essential skill for life.   I really like the distinction Terry Heick makes between thought and knowledge and the interplay between them.

There are a couple of more I might add to the list, but it is still a great group of educators and thinkers. Others I would consider are John Dewey, Maria Montessori, Paulo Freire, and Alfred North Whitehead.  Even with those nine, the list is likely incomplete.

Educational institutions are constantly synchronizing their curricula with digital literacy to maintain pace with burgeoning technology. The feature can be witnessed by the presence of computers in the classroom, the utilization of academic software to deliver curriculum, and study materials made available to the accessibility of online students. In a huge number of education institutes classrooms are furnished to employ audience response systems and smartboards. These tools in such a situations are useful esp when the faculty is well versed in digital literacy.

Word of the Week "Moral Compass": Meditate on this Phrase

Word of the Week "Moral Compass": Meditate on this Phrase | Educational | Scoop.it

These two words used together are important – very important.  In the legal profession, we must use a moral compass because we meet people who have lost their way.  We have to make sure, at all time, that we do not head in the wrong direction also.

Take time to meditate about the meaning of the word “moral compass” to you.

I am unsure that moral compass is a device. A compass is, but thinking of morals in an instrumental way, even metaphorically, misses the point. Having said this, the article makes good points. We communicate morals through our words, actions, thoughts, etc. It is communicating that is important.

Teachers communicate all the time. We should consider what that means to the learning of others.

Giving: The Most Important Lesson in Life

Giving: The Most Important Lesson in Life | Educational | Scoop.it
One of the most important lessons is that people who care about the needs of others and give of themselves go much further in life. Giving is a winning game

Some people may look at you cross-eyed after you make a kind gesture. “C’mon,” they’ll think, “why are you really doing this? No one does something for nothing.” Then, when they realize there’s no catch, something magical will happen. You’ll be viewed in an entirely new light.

Just think how far your kindness will go toward building trust, strengthening your relationships, developing teamwork and camaraderie, enhancing your reputation and sense of self-worth — not to mention, adding to your karma.

Giving is a winning game. As Patti Thor says, “It’s not that successful people are givers; it is that givers are successful people.” So remember, it IS better to give than receive. Go ahead; give it a try.

27 Characteristics Of Authentic Assessment

27 Characteristics Of Authentic Assessment

Almost 25 years ago, I wrote a widely-read and discussed paper that was entitled: “A True Test: Toward More Authentic and Equitable Assessment” that was published in the Phi Delta Kappan. I believe the phrase was my coining, made when I worked with Ted Sizer at the Coalition of Essential Schools, as a way of describing “true” tests as opposed to merely academic and unrealistic school tests. I first used the phrase in print in an article for Educational Leadership entitled “Teaching to the (Authentic) Test” in the April 1989 issue.

Daniel Rimmereid's curator insight, March 25, 2014 8:57 PM

This article offers great insight into what authentic assessment is. It was very helpful in telling me precisely what authentic assessment is and how it can be used in the classroom. The author’s main point is that many people and educators have ruined the meaning of authentic assessment so he wants to clear the air and be very direct with his definition of authentic assessment. It will certainly try to implement authentic assessment into my classroom and teaching. Authentic assessment is much needed in our “standardized testing world.” If a teacher uses authentic assessment right they can help their students more fully and deeply understand the material they are being assessed on as well as grow in many “real world” skills. Authentic assessment provides a way in which students can take ownership of what they have learned and how they can apply it.
