BYOD in the Classroom: Can Student-owned devices work at schools?

BYOD in the Classroom: Can Student-owned devices work at schools? | Education Technology - theory & practice | Scoop.it

Today’s students are infinitely more tech-savvy than any generation before them.

In fact, 93% of today’s teens either have a computer or access to one, according to the Pew Research Internet Project’s “Teens and Technology 2013“ report. Additionally, 78% of teens have a cell phone, and just a little under half of them are smartphones. These devices give teenagers the ability to be constantly connected to the Internet and their peers. Why not leverage this connectivity for the classroom?

While in the past education has been a priority within many national budgets, the 2008 economic crisis put a strain on budgets, which led to a decline in funds being set aside for education. The decline was greatest in the United States, Brazil, Norway, Ireland, and Mexico, according to a 2013 report from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). As budgets shrink and money dwindles, it can be hard for schools to invest in new technology for students and teachers to take advantage of. As these cuts continue to happen, some schools may consider a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) model for students.
