Is Technology the Saving Grace of Education After All?

Is Technology the Saving Grace of Education After All? | Education Technology | Scoop.it
During a speech at a 2010 conference in Austin, then-Texas Governor Rick Perry praised the move to e-Readers, asserting: "I don't see any reason in the world why we need to have textbooks in Texas in the next four years."
Matt Woodruff's insight:

"Worldwide spending on Tablets has increased 60% (2013-2014) but with little proof these initiatives are improving basic learning".  Couple of interesting views on this - one from academic research from the University of Cambridge (Tablet use in schools: A critical review of Learning Outcomes,  Hassler, Major & Hennessy 2015) and one from personal practitioner led pilots in the UK that do indeed point to mixed outcomes but go some way to highlight the factors that lead to improved outcomes and avoid some of the pitfalls.

Why Ed Tech Is Not Transforming How Teachers Teach

Why Ed Tech Is Not Transforming How Teachers Teach | Education Technology | Scoop.it
A mountain of evidence indicates that educators have been painfully slow to use technology to change and improve the ways they teach.
Matt Woodruff's insight:

I find myself more and more drawn to the articles on the failure of EdTech to transform how teachers teach (as this article puts it), or EdTech generally failing to improve student outcomes.

There is a common pattern for these titles, where the article content only suggests that poorly delivered educational change programmes, that involve technology, do not improve outcomes.  Surely no-one still believes you can flick a switch and things improve?  When will the titles of these stories change to reflect the real failure is in underestimating the effort required in professional development for practitioners to make effective use of technology in their own environments?

If anyone knows of a good meta data research study of 'Failed EdTech' projects with root cause analysis I'd be interested to know.

Teacher uses Office Mix to deliver lessons - Office Blogs

Teacher uses Office Mix to deliver lessons - Office Blogs | Education Technology | Scoop.it
It was going to be a hectic week and Justin Harbin, instructional designer at Lancaster Bible College was set to be out of class during a very critical time. Harbin turned to Office Mix to conduct a full week’s worth of blended classroom lectures, while he missed class to be with his wife and newborn daughter.
Matt Woodruff's insight:

Lovely to see the outcomes of technology supported learning affording quality family time!  The Whitehaven Academy in the UK is starting to learn and use Mix in combination with the KiPathways Apps for Office365, and a trial of Britannica Online as an initial content resource bank along with their teacher generated curriculum plans and resources.  I'll be posting regularly on this pilot programme as we run it over the next 13 weeks until the end of term, so follow us on The Knowledge Network facebook page or my social media to stay tuned! #edtech #edchat #officemix

Fall In Love With eLearning: Gamification, Personalization and Clear Pathways - eLearning Industry

Fall In Love With eLearning: Gamification, Personalization and Clear Pathways - eLearning Industry | Education Technology | Scoop.it
Gamification makes learning fun, personalisation makes it relevant and pathways make it clear - that's the recipe for learner engagement!
Matt Woodruff's insight:

As we move towards to release of our personalised learning pathways Apps for Office365 we draw on industry research as well as engaging directly with students, staff and parents in K-12.  This is a good article drawing itself on relevant examples ('Fun Theory' from Volkswagen) of making learning (or the process of changing behaviours) engaging through gamification - principles we absolutely agree with.

Flipped learning is a pedagogical approach in which direct instructions moves from the group learning space to the individual learning space, and the resulting group space is transformed.

Move over boys: Girls are better at creating computer games

Move over boys: Girls are better at creating computer games | Education Technology | Scoop.it
A study by the University of Sussex found that girls wrote more complex computer game programs, but that film portrayals of nerdy computer geeks may be putting them off.
Matt Woodruff's insight:

With higher attainment in literacy, girls stories are typically more complex and well developed, leading them to write more complex programs and gameplay.  Interesting study looking at the 'triggers' used in a new language called Flip, which comes to these conclusions.

Further recent review (University of New Brunswick) of 308 other studies, covering 1.1 million children also suggests that girls outperform boys in school in EVERY subject (including science and maths), and have done so for at least 100 years.

How a Macedonian teacher incorporates mobile technologies and OneNote in her classroom - Office Blogs

How a Macedonian teacher incorporates mobile technologies and OneNote in her classroom - Office Blogs | Education Technology | Scoop.it
The one thing my students carry with them at all times is their phones, so I often think of ways they can be used in the service of education. My students use a lot of apps they aren't aware that can be used for learning—like Instagram for sharing photos and videos, Tumblr for digital vocabulary walls, SoundCloud for building an audio library and finally Office Lens for streamlining class work.
Matt Woodruff's insight:

Now this really is a clever use of IFTTT to bring together disparate social posting by students all into a single log in OneNote.  Great example of teacher creativity, building recipes to make their life easier! #edtech

New Office Delve People Experiences in Office 365 - Office Blogs | Education Technology | Scoop.it
A company’s most important assets are its people—YOU. The knowledge and experience of you and your colleagues collectively brings great value to your company. And as you communicate and work out loud together within Office 365, the value of your work can be surfaced and discovered by others in Delve. Today, we are announcing enhancements to Office 365 that leverage Delve for easier people-based discovery and greater self-expression.
Matt Woodruff's insight:

With this update, and some of those planned such as 'working on' and 'praise', I think this pushes Delve from the 'could be interesting' to the 'must include in school implementation plans'.  Our schools using KiPathways will have their assignment and content surfaced in a really rich and intuitive way through Delve.  #edtech

Matt Woodruff's insight:

The importance of the authenticity of learning activities - learning situated in real world context - is arguably difficult to achieve in traditional 14-16 models.  It's great to see more options for young people and their personal learning pathways appear with this 14-16 provision from Bromley, and in other regions such as Oldham and Liverpool.
