Digital literacy 'as important as reading and writing' | Telegraph.co.uk

Digital literacy 'as important as reading and writing' | Telegraph.co.uk | Education Technology | Scoop.it

When I was at school, ICT was labelled, rightly or wrongly, as the “doss lesson”. Unlike English, maths and science, ICT was not tested and, as such, was universally thought of as an hour of either surfing the internet, or falling asleep over yet another lesson in Microsoft Office.

Considering the importance placed on digital literacy in many career roles, the new 2014 curriculum, announced in July by Michael Gove the Education Secretary, seems a step in the right direction.

With the focus shifting from general ICT skills towards computer science, there has been debate over whether teaching children as young as 5 the basics in computer programming is really necessary in the curriculum?

Mark Surman, Executive Director of the Mozilla Foundation, argues that skills such as these are as important as learning to read and write.

(READING & WRITING 9/22)

Being in such a digitalized world, the skills regarding computers and other smart devices is becoming more and more vital to human beings. This article published by The Telegraph in the UK is a renowned international newspaper/media group in the UK and other surrounding areas. The publisher, Josie Gurney-Read, is an Online Education Editor that has published many articles regarding university level information (while maintaining almost 2K Twitter followers!). I personally feel anyone around the age of our generation sees "digital literacy" and know exactly what the term means whereas others, often older, are still learning these skills while we took them in at young ages. I chose this article because I feel anyone who reads it can relate and understand to what the editor is saying. Implying the importance of digital literacy in our new world is immensly important whether one believes or not. This article suggests digital literacy should be looked at as math and sciences; as another skill humans need to accomplish by the time we reach university.

"Document cameras are incredibly helpful devices in the classroom.

While they seem like a comparatively dated technology in the midst of the smart apps and wearable technology we see today, document cameras remain sturdy, reliable, and useful technology pieces to use in a variety of ways."
