The process of “doing math” becomes more efficient and less frustrating when kids know their facts. Luckily there are plenty of fun apps that can help kids become “math fact” proficient. All of these apps are FREE or were “FREE for a limited time” when I reviewed them. Check them out – they’re all great!"

It has no teachers. No books. No MOOCs. No dorms, gyms, labs, or student centers. No tuition.

And yet it plans to turn out highly qualified, motivated software engineers, each of whom has gone through an intensive two- to three-year program designed to teach them everything they need to know to become outstanding programmers.

How Much Multitasking Should Be Done In The Classroom? - Edudemic

How Much Multitasking Should Be Done In The Classroom? - Edudemic | Education technology | Scoop.it
“Ability to multitask”. That phrase is seen on nearly every job description that I’ve ever read. It doesn’t matter what industry you’re in or what job you’re applying for – everyone expects everyone to be able to multitask. But what does that mean, exactly? Does it mean being able to work on three things at …

Marian Royal Vigil's curator insight, July 15, 2014 3:49 PM

Some of the findings here are alarming.  I know that technology has made it much harder for me to focus make the most efficient and effective use of my time.  We don't really "multitask", weflit between things sequentially and usually don't do any of them as well as we would if we did only one thing at a time.

The future of learning - Sugata Mitra

The future of learning - Sugata Mitra | Education technology | Scoop.it

In this talk, Sugata Mitra will take us through the origins of schooling as we know it, to the dematerialisation of institutions as we know them. Thirteen years of experiments in children's education takes us through a series of startling results – children can self-organise their own learning, they can achieve educational objectives on their own, they can read by themselves. Finally, the most startling of them all: groups of children with access to the internet can learn anything by themselves. From the slums of India, to the villages of India and Cambodia, to poor schools in Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, the USA and Italy, to the schools of Gateshead and the rich international schools of Washington and Hong Kong, Sugata's experimental results show a strange new future for learning.

This App Teaches You How To Play Almost Any Song You Can Find Online And It's Awesome - Business Insider | Education technology | Scoop.it

"I took piano lessons as a kid, but it's hard lugging a piano around when you want to take your tune-playing on the road.

I tried teaching myself some chords on the guitar, but it turns out that you need big, strong hands to press down on the strings hard enough to make music.

My hands are neither big, nor are they strong.

So instead I picked up the ukulele, and, using YouTube, taught myself how to play.

The problem is, I've run out of songs to play that are remedial enough for me to learn. That's where Riffstation Play comes in."

10 ways Google Classroom will make learning better | Ditch That Textbook | Education technology | Scoop.it

I became a fan of Google Reader, which collected blog posts and other publications to RSS in one easy-to-access place. Then Google discarded this service — one that had a very loyal user base. Google has a history of doing this to features that don’t meet its needs anymore. If I’m making the switch to Classroom, I’d like to know that Google has committed to it.

Joe Pereira's curator insight, June 2, 2014 8:44 AM

A nice little article with a few good game suggestions to use in the classroom, although it is extremely disappointing not see any paser-based IF mentioned when they've included 'Gone Home' and 'Myst', described as a 'first-person puzzle game'. Both these games are a direct graphical evolution of the standard text adventure. One thing I don't like in the article though, is the author's decision to discuss both the topics of Digital Game-based learning and Gamification. I don't think Gamification should be discussed at all with educators, when real video games can be used for learning, instead of game-like concepts.

Curation as a tool for teaching and learning

What is curation anyway, and how can it be used as a tool for student and teacher learning? This essay will investigate what curation is and the different contexts it is used in. Why is it important; who are the curators, what motivates them and what makes a great curator? What processes and tools are used for curation and what digital literacies are required for successful curation? It will conclude with an investigation into ways teachers can use curation both with and for their students and as a tool for their own professional learning and a brief look at some curation tools.
