Research Supports Global Curriculum

Research Supports Global Curriculum | Education, Technology and Storytelling | Scoop.it
Language immersion, global competence, and vibrant professional learning communities (PLCs) enhance student learning at John Stanford International School.
Patricia Stitson's insight:

Though the focus is on foreign language immersion using communication technology is also seen as being an integral part of becoming a glbally competent student.

Note the following excerpt from "Educating for Global Competence: Preparing our Youth to Engage in the World...".  This is from the section on key concepts to include in the curriculum:

"Learning through international collaboration.

Videoconferencing, social networking, and other communication technologies now allow students unprecedented opportunities to investigate issues of global significance with students around the world—much the way working professionals now operate in global teams. There are a great many ways to structure such interactions among students, from scientific collaborations on shared databases to collaborative artistic endeavors. Opportunities for students to learn from adults worldwide through virtual connections are also widely accessible through universities, learned organizations, nonprofits, and businesses. As just one example practicable almost anywhere, inviting community members into a school to share the multinational origins of everyday retail products can be an eye-opening experience for students." pg 94

Further, among the competencies included in the Profile of an Asia Society International Studies Schools Network (ISSN) High School is to able to use digital media and technology to access and evaluate information from around the world and effectively communicate, synthesize and create new knowledge.

Nic take for curators...

donhornsby's curator insight, May 15, 7:37 AM

(From the article): I'd like the sense that someone of taste and discretion and experience has already whittled down the choices. (That's the problem with search engines, by the way - no taste!) The world needs editing - and yes, I use that word advisedly. Give me the cheeses that matter, offer me a wine list that's manageable. And put all the information that's raining down on us from cyberspace in a convenient, easy-to-handle form. Sorry, I never intended to be a defence of newspapers!

Tracey Lien:  "In most video games, players are entrusted with performing actions: run, jump, shoot, swing, slash, crouch and curb-stomp. The developer sets the scene, establishes the context and the player is released into the world with an arsenal of actions. In Loveshack Entertainment's Framed, things work the other way around."

With Graphic novels being vogue and interactive media sought after- this is a great game by Loveshack Entertainment. It puts the audience in control to craft the story.

Deanya Lattimore's curator insight, May 11, 9:17 AM

Reminds me of Led Zeppelin's _In Through the Out Door_ interior album jackets.  I realized a few years ago that story arc is particular to the character's point of view, and should be talked about in that way, so this really adds a dimension to the analysis that could help students imagine stories from multiple perspectives.

I absolutely LOVE how storytelling is used in this organization as a connective learning tool. As a part of the idea of 'education' shifting away from simple knowledge acquisition there is a significant power in story.  It is an opportunity for learning about and from one another.  I feel we have lost this and I welcome it back.

Patricia Stitson's insight:

I am not alone!  "there is a good chance I hijacked the meetting and have told a story that may or may not be on topic."

But even in those meeting those 'off topic' stories often surve a purpose.  They allow everyone a little breather, expecially when things become heated or discombobulated and that in of itself can smooth things out.  And in a lecture setting, that story takes you away to a special place, adding emotion to the facts.

I just love this site.

A very interesting article with a personal take of the 'digital divide'.  As online educators we may be inclined to focus on technologically rich vs poor as the dividing line but what of digital estrangement?  Yes it has been recognized that one of the leading causes of dropout is a feeling of isolation and we are working on that.  Is there more to that picture however?  This article leads me to say yes.
