Heutagogy: designing for self-directed learners

Heutagogy: designing for self-directed learners | Education Technologies and Emerging Media | Scoop.it
While acknowledging that the whole concept of self-determination – or ‘Google
learning’ as it has been called, pejoratively, in certain circles – is fraught with the potential for missing the point, being distracted into rabbit warrens or just getting bad information, we would like to emphasise that this is only a potential.

===> Any learning theory is only as good as the way in which it is applied and worked through, and we have seen it produce highly successful results where correctly applied, in the right circumstances. <===

Watch this space for chapter and verse, as we will soon be publishing case studies of several recent programmes that feature high levels of learner self-direction.

Learners are changing, learning is changing – and heutagogy can give important clues about rebalancing the burden of responsibilities and permissions in an always-on, networked, instructorless, post-course world.

Heutagogia  e o olhar sobre a aprendizagem do século XXI:

1- protagonizar a própria aprendizagem

2- educadores mantem foco no processo de aprendizagem ao inves do conteudo

3- evita-se aprendizagem focada no educador

4- migra-se para o "mundo da aprendizagem"

5- explora e aprende praticando auto escolha e acao auto direcionada

6- avancar alem da disciplina

Kentucky Districts to go Virtual for Online Snow Days

Kentucky Districts to go Virtual for Online Snow Days | Education Technologies and Emerging Media | Scoop.it

"A virtual learning plan approved by the state of Kentucky will allow snow days — a welcome refuge for school-weary students — to become learning days."

Unfortunately, "Students who do not have adequate Internet access at home will receive hard copies of any assignments."

Usually, classes are cancelled with little or no prior notice. Kids without internet or computers at home may be left out in the cold.

Nancy J. Herr's curator insight, November 5, 4:00 PM

An innovative option to extending the school year, virtual school days are being put in place by a number of states. Districts who habitually close school for more than a day or two a season can instead provide instruction so a day won't be missed. Kentucky's plans are discussed here.m

eLearning - Are We Missing The Point?

eLearning - Are We Missing The Point? | Education Technologies and Emerging Media | Scoop.it

"I want to start this off by asking one simple question…does eLearning really work? Unfortunately though there is no simple way to answer that question.

There are many arguments both for and against eLearning, but the stark reality is, that if you are pushed for an answer, when you look at the facts, the answer is a resounding “NO”…but it so easily could be a “Yes.”

Who is Leading the Digital Leap?

Who is Leading the Digital Leap? | Education Technologies and Emerging Media | Scoop.it

"Despite the fact that technology use is part of daily life, on balance, schools’ use of technology remains far from ubiquitous. There is no question that some teachers, principals, and district leaders have made considerable progress in using technology to transform learning. And there are strong examples of school districts that are leading digital change system-wide. However, there exists a major challenge: Few school systems have found a way to create a sustainable, digitally-enabled ecosystem."

The LinkedIn Effect: Why Social Media Is Now Mandatory for Success

The LinkedIn Effect: Why Social Media Is Now Mandatory for Success | Education Technologies and Emerging Media | Scoop.it
Call it the “LinkedIn Effect.” Social networks like LinkedIn and Facebook have changed the nature of human interaction forever. Tests Don’t Build Skills, Teachers Do: Remembering the Role of Technology

Tests Don’t Build Skills, Teachers Do: Remembering the Role of Technology | Education Technologies and Emerging Media | Scoop.it

"We are risking driving a generation of students away from using the device in their pockets to learn, instead becoming disheartened and bored by what it means to “use the computer.” In an era of looking for progress in a number, we are failing to remember that it won’t matter what students can tell a machine if they don’t have the depth, warmth and excitement that comes from an innovative classroom environment. Tests don’t build skills. Teachers do."

iPads + project based learning = limitless possibilities - Daily Genius

iPads + project based learning = limitless possibilities - Daily Genius | Education Technologies and Emerging Media | Scoop.it
Though more than two years into my school’s implementation of project based learning, yesterday, I found myself excited all over again. I was helping a second grade teacher enhance her landforms PBL by using Padlet as part of the KWL process and suddenly realized that this approach to student-centered learning has truly become a part of who we are as a school.

My adventures in combining PBLs and iPads began with a gift of two carts. I had just started taking the PBLU online courses when the head of our independent pre-k through eighth grade school challenged each grade-level team to teach one unit using the PBL approach while finding authentic ways to draw in iPads. As the lower school technology integration person, I immediately went on a quest to find a guinea pig willing to plan and co-teach a PBL unit incorporating iPads. This is the story of that first experience. . .
