Should All Students Be Forced to Learn Computer Science? | Smart ... | Education tech122 | Scoop.it

A recent blog at Real Clear Science argues that kids shouldn't just be able to use computers better than their parents, they should be required to take computer science and understand how the technology works. Ms. Cruz's IT Students: Read the article. According to the article's reference, which nine (9) states require computer science as a core standard? What reason does the author state to support his argument that all students should take a computer science class? Respond to the Edmodo poll using the knowledge you know have from taking this class and reply to the poll by stating why you feel the way you do. Earn 15 XP. Closes 12/21/12.

Ms. Cruz's students: Read the full article and watch the two videos. Then answer the following questions. 1) Who is Marck Zuckerberg? 2) Why can't Facebook find engineers to hire? 3) When did Gates get access to a computer? 4) Based on the video, does Gates believe that everyone should learn to program? 5) The article compares programming a computer to what? 6) Why does Gates think the K-12 education system needs to be improved? 7) According to the video, how many schools in the US teach students how to code? 8) State your opinion, do you agree or disagree that every student should learn to code? Why or Why not? 9) Did you notice how young the students in the video were who were learning to code? If not, watch the video again. Are you surprised that these students are programming? Why or Why not? 10) Create and answer a how and what question. 11) Create a PowerPoint slide to encourage students to learn to program. Use Scratch images in your slide. You will have time in class to work on your slide. I suggest coming up with a rough sketch before class. Earn 50 XP. Closes 3/15/2013.
