American Student Deported From Russia for Private Tutoring  | Educational Resources & Ideas | Scoop.it

Yan Bonner — an American citizen studying in Russia — has been deported from the country for tutoring without a special license, the Interfax news agency reported Monday. “While studying at Kazan University he was giving private lessons in English in his free time. He didn't have a work permit or a special license,” according to the court representative.

The student was fined 2,000 rubles ($30) by the Kazan district court. Bonner filed an appeal against the decision but it was rejected.

According to local news website ProKazan.ru, Bonner came to Russia in 2012. During his time in Russia, he learned Russian and got married.

Russian Patriarch Gives Blessing to Bombing Campaign in Syria

Russian Patriarch Gives Blessing to Bombing Campaign in Syria | Educational Resources & Ideas | Scoop.it

As Russia marked Orthodox Christmas on 7 January, Patriarch Kirill said in an interview recorded earlier that the country’s military campaign in Syria was necessary to protect the country from “terrorism” – and that Christianity "justifies military action when it defends people, society and the state."
"What is now happening in the seemingly remote Syria, which in actual fact is not remote, it's literally our neighbor, is defense of the Fatherland," he said in an interview on state-run Rossiya 1 television, Interfax reported.
If terrorist groups are allowed to gain power in Syria, in all probability they will bring "misery and distress" to the Russian people, Kirill told interviewer Dmitry Kiselyov, a powerful media chief and journalist, who is also a staunch supporter of President Vladimir Putin, according to DPA.

Also on 7 January, a group of Russian activists and investigative bloggers said they had evidence, including photos and video footage from Hmeymin airbase in Syria, that Russian aircraft deployed there were armed with cluster bombs, The Moscow Times reports.

The Less You Know, the Better You Sleep: Russia’s Road to Terror and Dictatorship under Yeltsin and Putin

The Less You Know, the Better You Sleep: Russia’s Road to Terror and Dictatorship under Yeltsin and Putin | Educational Resources & Ideas | Scoop.it

In December 2013, David Satter became the first American journalist to be expelled from Russia since the Cold War. According to The Moscow Times, Russia's English language newspaper, "It was not surprising he was expelled. It was surprising it took so long.

In "The Less You Know, the Better You Sleep: Russia's Road to Terror and Dictatorship under Yeltsin and Putin", which is published by the Yale University Press, Satter describes how Boris Yeltsin presided over the criminalization of Russia and why Vladimir Putin was chosen as his success.

Central to this story are the 1999 Russian apartment bombings which were blamed on the Chechens but which, Satter argues, were actually carried out by the FSB security police. Satter's book explains the role of U.S. policies in Putin's rise and the dangers Putin's regime poses for the security of the West."

How Russia Became ‘Mordor’ on Google

How Russia Became ‘Mordor’ on Google | Educational Resources & Ideas | Scoop.it

-The current glitch may be explained by tensions in relations between Russia and Ukraine in recent years, as Google Translate notes that “the meaning of words depends on the context in which they’re used.”

-Russia and Mordor were also mentioned in the same context when activists planned to place the Tolkien-inspired “Eye of Sauron” installation on a skyscraper in Moscow ahead of the premiere of the latest “Hobbit” film in 2014, pro-Kremlin station RT writes.

-Tolkien's works are popular in both Russia and Ukraine, where they have inspired a medieval re-enactment movement. “Just why the Oxford professor struck such a chord … is a matter of intense debate. Some say there was a clear analogy between Mordor and Soviet authority; others that the vivid reality and straightforward morality of Tolkien’s tales provided refuge from the wild chaos of the 1990s,” The Telegraph wrote in November.

Serious Doodling: 5 Effective Classroom Drawing Exercises

Serious Doodling: 5 Effective Classroom Drawing Exercises | Educational Resources & Ideas | Scoop.it
A quick look at the copious quantities of artwork on the walls of almost any school shows that incorporating drawing into classroom work is not an original idea. But, these drawing assignments are often time consuming and done to give students a rest from “real” work. The frequency of drawing assignments decreases with age: you will rarely see calculus posters, for example, and almost never see drawings at university. (Later on in their working lives, however, almost every presentation comes with graphics.)

Here are several ideas for quick, effective, and engaging classroom drawing exercises that can be used in a range of topics by anyone regardless of drawing talent.
