Creating magic circles enables a group to solve puzzles, connect dots, prototype, make mistakes, and learn from them. In other words, the magic circle is where the competencies of creativity get “played” out. Knowing how to build one is itself a creative skill.

How Georgetown Day School is building a generation of changemakers.

Empathy is everywhere at Georgetown Day School, from the kindergarteners earnestly trading “peace roses” to resolve peer conflicts to the fifth graders spiritedly debating food access in impoverished DC communities. The school’s comprehensive social curriculum, which encompasses all 1000 of the pre-K to 12th grade students, proves that it is indeed possible to meaningfully teach empathy at any age.

Depressed economy? Let the parks go. Low test scores? Eliminate recess. Worried about vandals? Close the playgrounds. Whatever the problem, too many policy-makers seem to think that cutting back on play is the answer.

As our world becomes more complex, future generations will need to be even more adaptable and resilient... For a child whose life has been turned upside down, play is absolutely essential for maintaining a sense of stability amid turmoil and helping to work through emotional trauma.
