How to Evaluate a MOOC | Sara Goldrick-Rab - The Education Optimists

Since we're already doggie-paddling around the deep-end of the MOOC phenomenon, it seems high time to begin thinking about how to assess MOOCs.  This is far from straightforward, since they are not typical courses and might best be conceived of as extension or continuing education activities

Then an evaluation framework is suggested with three topics: cost, impact, side-effects. The impact section is divided in impact on faculty and impact students. So far so good. Student impact is measured by counting enrolment, student's country of origin and previous education and three different completion rates. Previous education and country of origin really are control variables, used to explain variation in the target variable, I would say. The target variable seems to be completion rate, in various forms. Isn't that odd?

I thought education was about people learning something and teachers helping them to do so. Here, what people learn is defined by what gets taught. The only objective, that is, is to make sure as many people as possible drink from the fountain of knowledge. But wouldn't it make sense to evaluate whether the students learnt what the course intended them to? Or, even better, whether the students learn anything useful? But no, the perspective is entirely institutional. People learn what the institution thinks they should learn. By subscribing to a particular MOOC, they are at the professional mercy of the institution putting up that MOOC. And, of course, the only thing the institution wants make sure is that _as many people as possible_ do subscribe. Indeed, that's what yet get if you see education as a vehicle to make money.
