The Science of Storytelling

The Science of Storytelling | Education Matters - (tech and non-tech) | Scoop.it

Many studies show us that our brains prefer storytelling to facts. When we read facts, only the language parts of our brains work to understand the meaning. When we read a story, the language parts of our brains and any other part of the brain that we would use if we were actually experiencing what we’re reading, light up.This means that it’s easier for us to remember stories than facts. Our brains can't make major distinctions between a story we’re reading about and something we are actually doing....

Intriguing information about how storytelling affects the brain and makes it easier to remember things and make distinctions between the story and our experience.

M. W. Catlin's curator insight, July 29, 10:09 AM

I've been talking about these ideas in my workshops for quite a while now.  We are hardwired for story.  It's one, if not a significant reason for our "success" as a species.  It's also one of the incredible frustrations of our times.   That science and facts yield the field to the fiction of prevarication and conspiracy is a tragedy.

Sacra Jáimez's curator insight, September 15, 2:10 PM

Sin duda, narrar, contar relatos en unas de ls actividades más atractivas para cualquier clase, en particular las de lenguas. Es algo común a todos los seres hulmanos. Algunos datos a tener en cuenta.

Research: How Video Production Affects Student Engagement

TedX recently commissioned a study of nearly 1,000 videos, segmenting them out by by video type and production style, and discovered this among their other findings:

  1. Shorter videos are more engaging. Engagement drops after 6 minutes.
  2. Videos with a more personal feeling are more effective than high-fidelity studio recordings.
  3. Videos in which the instructor speaks quickly and with high enthusiasm are more engaging.
  4. Khan-style tablet drawings are more engaging than power point slides.

Curious what inspired Bill and Melinda Gates to underwrite the first site-wide match offer on DonorsChoose.org? Read Bill Gates's post explaining why.

This offer is only available until Sunday, August 24th, so support a classroom project today! Just click "Get Started" below to find a project that inspires you. Or click "Pick a project for me" to have us select a high-need classroom.

App makes bulletin boards come alive at Green school - New Jersey Herald

App makes bulletin boards come alive at Green school - New Jersey Herald | Education Matters - (tech and non-tech) | Scoop.it

"The bulletin boards throughout Green Hills School may look normal — with colorful paper and pictures covering them — but hover a tablet or smartphone loaded with a special app over them and they turn into learning tools, complete with videos and interactive lessons.

“I didn't want there to be all these passive areas throughout the school,” Superintendent John Nittolo said. “I wanted there to be chances for people to interact, to manipulate, to find info that changes so it's not static.”

The brainchild of Louis Rossi, the school's mathematics and ThinkSTEM coach, each bulletin board — technically known as “Augmented Reality Interactive Boards” — gives students an opportunity to learn away from the classroom."

Very cool!  It's great to see technology used in innovative ways to improve the educational experience for kids.

Melissa Marshall's curator insight, August 27, 12:06 AM

Use of QR codes and Aurasma can create an augmented reality where students simply need to hold their iPad up to an image or code to receive information. These are great for scavenger hunts and any activity students need to gather ideas, but here is an idea to use them with bulletin boards. This is hopefully something we can do in the Library soon!
