Grouping students is easy; creating effective student groups is less so.

The following infographic from Mia MacMeekin seeks to provide some ideas to help make group work easier in your classroom. The strength of this particular graphic is in the range of the ideas. The first tip refers teachers to Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal development, which frames student ability in terms of a range: what they can do unassisted, what they can do with the support of a More Knowledgeable Other (MKO), and what they cannot do even with support. This is different for each student, and understanding these ranges for students can help inform grouping decisions, whether you’re using a peer instruction model, ability grouping, or another approach.

Jackie rocks! great infographic

David Allen Wizardgold's curator insight, August 14, 3:07 AM
It is a shame that many teachers are afraid of technology and won't allow it in the classroom. They see it as a challenge to their control of the students and subject matter within the classroom. To a certain extent it is reasonable because the technology can be used for things other than learning in the classroom. The teachers have a responsibility to get as many of the students to have learned the curriculum for the day and it can't be done if the students are stuck in Facebook. The next thing will be to change the examination system to support the use of new technology rather than requiring students hit the paper with those old-fashioned pens.I'd like to think that there is a way technology can be used as it should be within the classroom. If the students are allowed to make full use of 21st-century technology then maybe the teachers will be able to teach for the next century instead of being stuck in the last one.

Calling All Makers! Look What You Can Build, Watch, Share & More With PBS Design Squad Nation

Calling All Makers! Look What You Can Build, Watch, Share & More With PBS Design Squad Nation | Education Matters - (tech and non-tech) | Scoop.it

"Our young people are super lucky to be involved in the Maker movement that is being embraced by schools and communities around the world.  It has brought innovation, creativity, tinkering, exploring and so much more into their lives and throughout education.

These spaces for our makers aren't just physical spaces.  They can also be found online and through wonderful apps being developed to bring making to our students no matter where they are.

I have a new favorite place for just this!  It is called Design Squad Nation from our friends at PBS. It is filled with places for our makers to Play, Build, Watch, Share, and more!  I love how children can personalize their experience on this website by exploring all of the different places in a variety of topics such as Outdoors, Sports, Friendly, Art, Food, Animals and Heros."

While some of the resources aren’t incredible (simply using Google Translate), and some of the languages fairly obscure (Welsh), the list is impressive if for no other reason than to demonstrate how much is actually out there if you do a little digging."
