What Exactly Is Blended Learning? | Edudemic

What Exactly Is Blended Learning? | Edudemic | Education, learning and technology | Scoop.it

We’ve been discussing blended learning in the Edudemic Magazine for several months but I had been struggling to find a video that helps explain what it actually is and why you should care.

Then I happened upon one of the startups I’ve been watching. Education Elements has a terrific page along with a video to describe exactly what blended learning is, what it hopes to achieve, and what it looks like.

I’ve embedded the video and some helpful snippets of information below. Be sure to check out the page for more information!

Distance learning: The online learning revolution - Telegraph

Distance learning: The online learning revolution - Telegraph | Education, learning and technology | Scoop.it
Elite US universities including Harvard, Princeton and Stanford are making their classes available for free online. Jessica Moore asks why.

Τhe rise of MOOCs is exciting both in its potential impact on campus learning, and in widening participation. It’s global. But is it really “the single biggest change in education since the printing press”, as Anant Agarwal, President of edX, has claimed? That’s a massive and, thus far, unsubstantiated claim.

Minecraft in the Classroom and Library — The Digital Shift

Minecraft in the Classroom and Library — The Digital Shift | Education, learning and technology | Scoop.it

“Can you teleport me?” “How do I fly?” “I need a sword.” “What are you building?” These eclectic exclamations are the sounds of a room full of teens playing Minecraft. We play every other Wednesday in Chicopee (MA) Public Library’s computer lab, often filling all 10 computers, and are occasionally joined by teens playing from home. They play freely, building whatever suits their fancies. As I’ve watched these teens discover skills in the game, I’ve been thinking about Minecraft’s potential for both structured and unstructured activities.

Isaac Asimov Imagines Learning in the Digital Age … and Gets It Quite Right (1989)

Isaac Asimov Imagines Learning in the Digital Age … and Gets It Quite Right (1989) | Education, learning and technology | Scoop.it
httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZmFEFO72gA

It features Asimov and a younger Bill Moyers talking about education and scientific progress, and it doesn’t take long for Asimov to start describing the revolution in learning we’re seeing unfold today. Imagine a world where computers, internet connections and websites let people learn when they want, wherever they want, and how they want. Suddenly technology democratizes education and empowers people of all ages, and, before too long, “Everyone can have a teacher in the form of access to the gathered knowledge of the human species.”

Millennials Are More 'Generation Me' Than 'Generation We,' Study Finds - Students - The Chronicle of Higher Education

Millennials Are More 'Generation Me' Than 'Generation We,' Study Finds - Students - The Chronicle of Higher Education | Education, learning and technology | Scoop.it

Millennials, the generation of young Americans born after 1982, may not be the caring, socially conscious environmentalists some have portrayed them to be, according to a study described in the new issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

The study, which compares the traits of young people in high school and entering college today with those of baby boomers and Gen X'ers at the same age from 1966 to 2009, shows an increasing trend of valuing money, image, and fame more than inherent principles like self-acceptance, affiliation, and community. "The results generally support the 'Generation Me' view of generational differences rather than the 'Generation We,'" the study's authors write in a report published today, "Generational Differences in Young Adults' Life Goals, Concern for Others, and Civic Orientation."

The Future Of Textbooks Is Free … And It’s Available Now

The Future Of Textbooks Is Free … And It’s Available Now | Education, learning and technology | Scoop.it

"The world of digital textbooks is more than heating up. It’s on fire. Amazon just launched a digital rental option for textbooks. Companies like Chegg are becoming academic hubs that can improve your education experience through more than just textbook rentals. But all of the options to use digital textbooks have cost money. And teachers as well as students simply don’t have much. Until now."

So, what exactly will the jobs of the future look like? And what must schools do to keep pace? Edudemic recently posted this infographic from Envisioning Tech, which maps out 40 ways education and technology will change over the next 30 years. Check it out.
