What Exactly Is Blended Learning?

What Exactly Is Blended Learning? | EDucation Leader News | Scoop.it

"Blended education. Hybrid learning. Flipping the classroom. Whatever one chooses to call it, this method of learning–which combines classroom and online education–is going places and making headlines along the way. While education experts continue to debate the efficacy of hybrid learning, its very existence has challenged them to re-evaluate not just technology’s place in (and out of) the classroom, but also how to reach and teach students more effectively. That alone is one of the major benefits of blended learning."

15 Ways Online Educators Can Light Social Engagement Afire

15 Ways Online Educators Can Light Social Engagement Afire | EDucation Leader News | Scoop.it

Social engagement is defined by one’s involvement with a social group or community... Before the advent of online education, social engagement was something that educators probably took for granted because it occurs naturally for students on traditional campuses, where face-to-face courses, extracurricular activities, and dorm life provides many opportunities for students to get to know their new community and their fellow students. But for online students, who generally work alone from home computers, the chance to make connections with other students or their larger community is severely limited. It’s up to educators themselves to become creative and provide options for students."

I am a huge supporter of social engagement in online courses. My students have access to a host of social media tools to stay in continual contact with the instructor and with each other throughout the day and even on evenings and weekends.

Society for College and University Planning (SCUP)'s curator insight, January 17, 2013 10:55 AM

"At the corner of Fifth Avenue and 14th Street in Manhattan, you can see higher education’s ambitions reaching to the sky. The New School’s 16-story University Center nears completion at a cost of $353 million.

The edifice is impressive. But would you want to hold the mortgage on it? That’s what you have, in effect, if you buy a tax-exempt bond from the New School. Before you invest in debt backed by an educational institution, think about the precarious state of this sector of the economy."

Deb Nystrom, REVELN's curator insight, January 17, 2013 11:41 AM

In my own neck of town, there are so many new buildings at the big University, I have lost count.  Now Moody's is talking about what we've already known:  "Every university funding source is under pressure, Moody’s asserts, meaning that all institutions -- even the elites -- need to rethink their business models."   ~  Deb

Society for College and University Planning (SCUP)'s comment, January 17, 2013 12:28 PM
