Culture is important. Being open and knowing when digital technology are the appropriate tools is important. They are not always despite what some tech gurus and change managers say. Sometimes, one student might be well-served to use a particular digital technology, another a different one, and a third something non-digital. Remembering that technology is the study of a craft and art is important in education.

Using technology, like all teaching, is not a matter of figuring out something. It is a matter of having complex conversations about these things as they emerge and enter our classrooms. It is about thinking about what we do and the relationships we are in including those with all technology, discursive and digital.

Unlocking the Internet of Things

Unlocking the Internet of Things | Education Innovation | Scoop.it

Storms of new data are growing bigger by the day, flowing in from social media, new internal corporate processes, retail and market transactions, electronic sensors and other machines. Especially machines.

The masses of new data follow technology innovation and by 2020 industry analysts predict there will be up to 30 billion devices connected to the Internet with unique IP addresses. This compares with 2009, when were a ‘mere’ 2.5 billion connected devices.

But what are we meant to do with the Things of the Internet? The amounts of data being created are so large that they are measured in quintillions of bytes – 2.5 quintillion bytes of new data are created every day.

5 Tips to Help Teachers Who Struggle with Technology @mrworkfcps

5 Tips to Help Teachers Who Struggle with Technology @mrworkfcps | Education Innovation | Scoop.it

"I'm not very tech savvy" is the response I usually hear from teachers that struggle with technology.

If you plan on introducing a new technology or are embarking on the mighty task of becoming a wireless BYOD school, here are five tips to help your teachers still struggling with technology.

Lou Salza's curator insight, March 13, 10:40 AM

This article is full of common sense and good advise. Integrating technology is similar to other professional development initiatives.  The tips are basically:

1. Build a team

2. Scaffold Professional Development support

3. Make time for teachers to meet and share

4. Make the tech advice relevant to the program goals and student achievement.

5. Encourage and celebrate successes.---Lou

Excerpt:

My personal favorite--# 2 Scaffold Effective PD:

"One big mistake when introducing technology is either too much or too little professional development. Teachers that struggle with technology might feel overwhelmed if you introduce too much too soon. On the flip side, if you don't provide enough PD, teachers may feel isolated. Going back to tip #1, have your tech team develop a feasible plan for effective PD using input from staff members.

Credit: Clker

PD also needs to be focused on being of value to teachers facing the hurdle of technology. How often do these teachers say, "Why would I try this when I've been doing just fine without it all these years?" If you are planning PD for the whole year, poll your teachers and ask what tech-related areas they would like to focus on. Select only one or two of these areas and make a concerted effort to help those teachers who are struggling."
