Dress Codes in Schools

Dress Codes in Schools | Pros and Cons of Wearing Uniforms In Schools | Scoop.it
Discusses the arguments supporting and opposing dress codes in schools, including if dress codes are legally enforceable, if they create a better learning environment, and if they restrict religious freedom.
Stephanie Kyzer's insight:

Hamilton, Jill. Dress Codes in Schools. Detroit, MI: Greenhaven, 2008. Print.

This book talks about the pros and the cons of wearing school uniforms. There really are both good and bad things about it. I think what it is, is that there are so many different dress codes everywhere you go. I think that is one of the reasons people cant agree on a decision. I don't understand why some people don't like the idea of a school uniform. I think they are a good idea because I feel like it does keep the students organized. I think it helps keep their minds focused on school instead of how they look. I think it buts down on the violence and the problems in schools. All in all I feel as though the school uniforms are a great idea. If it is going to help educate our kids better, then why not do it. As far as dress code, I don't think it would be that hard to come up with a nice looking uniform that still is within the requirements.

Stephanie Kyzer's insight:

Lynn, Essie. "Why School Uniforms Should Be Required." StudyMode. N.p., n.d. Web. 03 Apr. 2014.

There has been a debate that whether school uniforms should be worn or casual clothing is as good. There is no right or wrong answer. First wearing school uniforms promotes good discipline. It makes kids learn to look nice and they have to have their uniforms looking nice. It reduces distractions. Sometimes I know kids express themselves by wearing clothes, no matter how different the outfits are. So if all the students wore uniforms then everyone would look the same. Then another thing it is less expensive to buy school uniforms than many other clothes. Kids go through clothes so fast. They play in them, get them messy, and even sometimes tear them up. But its not good to tear up any clothes. Also some children can not afford the nicer clothes, so the students wearing the uniforms is a good thing. No one get picked on or teased for what they are wearing.

Stephanie Kyzer's insight:

          "CNN.com - Transcripts." CNN.com - Transcripts. N.p., 31 Aug. 2003. Web. 02 Apr. 2014. http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0308/31/sun.15.html.

Schools like the idea of school uniforms. They call it dress for success. The school uniforms set these kids up for success. This gives the students more time to focus on their school. The schools that have gone to wearing uniforms have said that everything has turned out positive. Most all of the students have gone along with it. It's a positive thing. The schools that do this have one goal and that it is that the students succeed. Having the students dress well and in there uniforms can make them come to school and do there work, They all have there education first on the priorities list. If the kids can focus on there school more the they are going to o better on their school work. They are going to have better goals to set for themselves and it is going to make it better for them in the long run.

Parents speak out against new school uniform policy - YouTube

A new uniform policy will go into effect next year at Blue Ridge Middle School. But not all parents are on board.
Stephanie Kyzer's insight:

"Parents speak out against new school uniform policy." YouTube. 10 Apr. 2013. YouTube. 01 Apr. 2014 <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98hF9Ha4ndk>.

I think that no matter where you are, there are people that love the idea and then there are some that don't like the idea. But I also feel like if parents could talk to the school and they could be pointed out the positive things that come from uniforms then more people I feel would be more willing to like it. Richard Griffn principle of Northwood Middle School in Greenville County has facts stating that his school is doing better academically and also the number of discipline referrals has gone down. The test scores in the school had risen. The parents are upset because they where not asked properly. They did not feel involved. But one thing I like about Principle Griffin is that he didn't only give a normal school uniform. He gave the students options on colors. That way everyone is still in uniform, he said himself that he didn't intend for everyone to look the same. The parents at his school is happy with the uniforms because they don't have to spend all there money on brand name clothing. But I also think that the school board could have told everyone a little better other than sending out a letter.

Are school uniforms helping or hindering? - TODAY.com

Are school uniforms helping or hindering? - TODAY.com | Pros and Cons of Wearing Uniforms In Schools | Scoop.it
Are your kids dressing for school this fall in standard khakis and polo shirts or are they getting decked out in the latest skinnies...
Stephanie Kyzer's insight:

          "TODAY Moms." TODAY. 31 Mar. 2014 <http://www.today.com/moms/are-school-uniforms-helping-or-hindering-6C10945768>.

Having the students wear uniforms will reduce bullying because kids won’t pick on each other for how they’re dressed because they will all be dressed alike, and in some settings, gang affiliation through dress will go down. The uniforms also reduce distractions. They will be able to focus more on learning and getting there education. Some people don't like the uniforms more so in teens and in high school settings because that's really the time kids express themselves and they are finding who they are. Some parents think that the kids wont be able to do this if they wear uniforms. In schools, majority of students depend on there clothes to describe themselves and they feel that is the only way of expressing it. One of the ladies in the article made a valid point about the kids wearing uniforms, she said that the students would still judge others because they don't look as good in the uniform as other and it could be like celebrities on TV. I personally think this is a problem in the kids and not so much with what they are wearing. Its a issue with the lack of respect that the kids have for one another. They are more focused on themselves than getting an education, and personally I think this is a big issue with the new generation today. If we do not stop it, it is only going to get worse.

Do You Think We Should Have School Uniforms? | ~Shayal's Blog~

Do you think school uniforms are useful? There have been a lot of discussions on this topic. Some people say it's a good idea and some say it's a bad idea.
Stephanie Kyzer's insight:

"Do You Think We Should Have School Uniforms?" Review. Web log post. School Uniforms. N.p., n.d. Web. <http://blogs.egusd.net/u3shayal/2013/09/19/do-you-think-we-should-have-school-uniforms/>.

Some people like school uniforms and some don't like them. I think this is always going to be a topic that is never one sided. People can not decided if they want them or not. Some people just don't want to wear it because it wouldn't be very stylish, but I think if more people cared then they could take the time to put a nice looking uniform together. This blogger doesn't care for uniforms, she says that kids spend more time in the morning getting dressed in a school uniform then they would in their own clothes. Im not so sure but she also says that kids don't like waking up to get ready and they have to wear the same clothes. She doesn't like the fact that the children cant go to school comfortable. Which that makes sense but I think that uniforms can be done a certain way and they could be comfortable. She also talks about how you can just take a nice pair of pants and a white shirt and you can just wear that. You can turn that into a school uniform and that's true but then you wouldn't really look similar to all the other students. I agree with this person on some points. But I still think that school uniforms are a good idea.

Students, parents bare claws over dress codes

Students, parents bare claws over dress codes | Pros and Cons of Wearing Uniforms In Schools | Scoop.it
As dress codes and even mandatory school uniform policies become more commonplace, students and parents are ending up in courtrooms and jailhouses in their determination to fight back.
Stephanie Kyzer's insight:

Johnson, Alex M. "Students, Parents Bare Claws over Dress Codes." Msnbc.com. N.p., n.d. Web. 02 Apr. 2014.

It is a everyday occurrence for students to be sent home for the day or even suspended for wearing the wrong clothes to school. It not really fair for these kids to be missing school over there clothes. This could be avoided if more schools had uniforms. Its getting so serious that these students and the there parents are ending up in a courtroom. Kids are getting into trouble over this, some are even serving jail time. They are hurting themselves as well as other people. Last month, Shabraia Dodd who is 15 years old was charged with assault on a police officer after she was arrested for wearing a jacket to East Ridge High School. She had a good reason for wearing a jacket, but I think if more people took the time to hear the students out about why they do these things. In Ohio, dozens of students were suspended earlier in the month after nearly 100 challenged the dress code by wearing hooded sweatshirts. Some of the students took them off when they where faced with discipline slips. But there where some students that didn't take them off and they where suspended.

Articles | Pearson | The Learning Curve | Pros and Cons of Wearing Uniforms In Schools | Scoop.it
Stephanie Kyzer's insight:

"Uniforms for learning." Articles. 02 Apr. 2014 <http://thelearningcurve.pearson.com/articles/article/uniforms-for-learning>.

School uniforms mostly exist only at exclusive private schools, if at all. Students wearing school uniforms can reduce tensions and stress between students. The kids won't have the stress of choosing what to wear to school. If the students had to wear uniforms, there would not be such a problem with violence and gangs. Kids wearing uniforms are not going to try to do anything violent because they know where they go to school and also they don't have there gang colors on. Having to wear school uniforms can lower costs for parents paying for clothing, because they wont have to worry about paying a bunch of money for name brand clothes. Then they also don't have to worry about the students getting there new clothes dirty while they are at school. But schools that have their students wear uniforms, they have more orderly educational environment. They are better at being on time to school. They are not spending so much time in the morning focusing on what to wear to school. This allows students to focus better on there school work. They can spend less time focusing on what they are wearing to work and more time eating breakfast. Its been studied that eating a healthy breakfast can make you more alert and help keep you focused in school. I also believe that schools should ask is they want there students to wear uniforms. It can be expensive buying uniforms, but it can also be expensive to keep buying regular clothes for your child.

Conform to the Uniform? | The Piper

Conform to the Uniform? | The Piper | Pros and Cons of Wearing Uniforms In Schools | Scoop.it
Stephanie Kyzer's insight:

Moura, Melissa. Students in Uniform. 2014. Somerville High School Newspaper, Somerville, Massachusetts.

I love this picture, the kids are all different but you can tell that they all go together because, they have on their uniforms. I think that this picture is a good example of what could be if more schools enforced uniforms. These four kids all look like best friends. They look happy to be at school. You can also see that there is math problems on the board behind them. This is what kids at school should look like. But in the article that goes along with this picture, it is stated that some people think that school uniforms takes away the students' voices. And another opinion is that some students love fashion and love to wake up and get dressed every morning. These students don't get to do what they love and that it would be the same as telling a athlete that he/she cant play sports anymore. Another thing that was mentioned in this article was by a sophomore Fernanda Rodrigues, she thinks uniforms would take away stress from the students. She says, “Every morning I wouldn’t have to worry about what to wear and I’d have more time to do other stuff, like eat breakfast.” I think that is another problem with students. They are so focused on getting ready in the morning and making sure they look there best, that most kids don't get a healthy breakfast or even a breakfast at all. I think that is another very important factor about school uniforms.

Do uniforms make schools better?

Do uniforms make schools better? | Pros and Cons of Wearing Uniforms In Schools | Scoop.it
Yes and no, say the experts. The heated debate over school uniforms shows no signs of cooling off.
Stephanie Kyzer's insight:

"Do uniforms make schools better?" GreatSchools. 30 Mar. 2014 <http://www.greatschools.org/find-a-school/defining-your-ideal/121-school-uniforms.gs>.

This has been a issue in the school system for a long time everywhere in the country. There are some that do not like the uniform idea and then there are some that love the idea. The people that like the idea of more schools having the students wear uniforms think that violence and gangs wouldn't be as much of a issue cause you are wearing the school colors and that's it. There wouldn't be much of a bulling issue because all the kids are wearing all the same clothes. They are also the cons to wearing uniforms. Kids are pushed to be there own person and be creative, but they cant do that if they are not allowed to express themselves in their own clothes. There is also the fact that school uniforms are normally expensive and not everyone can afford them. Then for the schools themselves, it would be easier for them to enforce the dress code on the students. A lot of schools think that the uniforms would help the students with there attendance because, the students wouldn't be spending as much time picking out what they are wearing to school and getting ready. There are good things and bad things.
