"All education is self-education....  We don't learn anything we do not want to learn." We might push ourselves for the extrinsic benefits of gaining certification but that learning is perhaps not as deep or as rewarding as that done through interest and curiosity.

This post contains a great list of possibilities and places to learn. Have you circle of people to support you and the passion and drive?

July 17, 2014 | Home Educators Association of Virginia

July 17, 2014 | Home Educators Association of Virginia | Education & Homeschooling | Scoop.it
July 17, 2014Legislative Update

Although the legislative session has yet to begin, HEAV wants to alert you to two issues of immediate concern to homeschoolers.

HEAV has learned from public records that a school board has submitted a formal, written request asking the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) to change the language in the religious exemption statute. This action could have far-reaching effects on the First Amendment rights (free exercise of religion) of homeschoolers of all faiths

Also, we have been made aware that another school district has changed its policies regarding how a parent notifies the superintendent that he intends to instruct his child[ren] at home. Requirements that exceed those specified by law create a dangerous precedent that can result in requests for increasing amounts of information and an infringement on a parent’s right to homeschool.

Please read the details below and learn what you can do to protect these rights.

Regards,

Yvonne Bunn
Director of Legislative Affairs

HEAV’S Virginia Homeschool Update-- July 23, 2014

HEAV’S Virginia Homeschool Update-- July 23, 2014 | Education & Homeschooling | Scoop.it
"Important Reminders (for Virginia Homeschoolers)

Ready or not, the school year will soon begin! Below are a few notes to keep in mind as you begin your preparations.

1. Test Results Are Due August 1.
According to § 22.1-254.1, your student’s test results, an evaluation, or an assessment are due by August 1.

2. Your Notice of Intent Is Due August 15.

The deadline to let your division superintendent know you will be homeschooling (August 15) is fast approaching. Be sure to know what information the law requires you to send–check the Notice of Intent information on the HEAV website.

There is also a Notice of Intent (NOI) form you can download and use. The Virginia homeschool law does not require you to use a particular form (you could write a letter if you’d like), but this form contains all the information required by law.

Have questions? Take a look at our Notice of Intent FAQs. If you don’t find the answer to your question, please just give us a call (804-278-9200), or send us an e-mail (support@heav.org)."
