The Padagogy Wheel - iPad Apps and Bloom's Taxonomy

Beth Dichter's curator insight, March 3, 2013 2:42 PM

Rather than pedagogy this is the Padagogy Wheel, looking at Bloom's Taxonomy related to the iPad. Would you agree with where the apps are placed or do you find that your use of them varies from what is suggested above?

Allan Carrington's comment, March 8, 2013 6:29 PM
THE PADAGOGY WHEEL: Thanks Jenny for reposting this. I am the first to agree that some of these apps might be better placed elsewhere on the wheel also there are more than one place for each app and there is constant need for updating as new apps are released. Where I am planning to take this next is develop "app powered learning sequences" i.e. connecting more than one app together to build a learning activity sequence. This will IMHO generate a highly engaging flow of transformational learning .... what do others think?

Also I thought some people might also find my 1.57 min video thought provoking. In it I introduce this wheel and more research I am working on with graduate attributes, Please visit http://tinyurl.com/padwheelvid which will be redirected to YouTube. I am calling the method the CAMERA Method .. "Capabilities and Attributes Mapping for Educational Results inspiring Achievement" ... it's all about the students being all they can be. It is about mapping everything back to graduate attributes, values and capabilities These are more than learning outcomes, they are an attempt to define a graduate.

There is also the podcast episode I did with Prof Geoff Scott of the Uni of Western Sydney. He has done years of research into graduate capabilities (aka values or attributes) It is fascinating stuff in the context of Technology Enhanced Learning and Teaching. He has asked the people who give the jobs and catalogued what the respective industries in the market place want in graduates. Duh! Look at the list and ask yourself are they being developed in students from Higher Education or in Education in general ... this is why mapping is so important. Are we equipping graduates to excel and make a difference .... hmmm! Have a look and listen to http://tinyurl.com/alsltblog. "If you exercise these capabilities ... you will be employed!" This sort of stuff makes the "CAMERA method" worth developing. Comments are welcome guys? ... regards Allan.

I use this often in my math classroom now.  The most difficult task is to make sure that students understand the meaning behind it!

This is definitely the direction we need to go - many students have such a hard time connect the math they learn in class to the real world and this is a step in the right direction!

"We need different, not better..."

"We need different, not better..." | Education Greece | Scoop.it

* We don’t need better assessments; we need different assessments that help us understand students as learners and constructors of their own ongoing education instead of knowers of information and narrow skills.
* We don’t need better teachers; we need different teachers who see their roles as master learners first and content guides or experts second.
* We don’t need better schools; we need different schools that function as communities of inquiry and learning instead of delivery systems for a highly proscribed, traditional curriculum.

… the idea of a fully networked, progressive learning environment would for the vast majority constitute *different* and would require us... to redefine the future.

Beth Dichter's curator insight, March 9, 2013 10:22 PM

This post looks at pros and cons of tablet in general, and introduces a tablet from the News Corporation called Amplify. This tablet is designed for K-12 education and comes pre-loaded. It is considered the first tablet designed for specifically for education.

Along with two videos (both from Amplify) that discuss the tablet the post also brings up some of the issues associated with tablets. For example they mention a recent Pew Research Center Poll that notes (quoted from the post):

"in poorer districts, there is often a serious lack of access to technology. “Teachers whose students are from the lowest income households feel they are at a disadvantage when it comes to using the internet and other digital tools such as cell phones, tablet computers and e-readers to enhance the learning process,”

To learn more about some of the issues associated with using tablets click through to this post. To go directly to the Amplify website for more information on their tablet - http://amplify.com/tablet.

10 Secrets To Unlocking The Learning Potential Of The iPad

10 Secrets To Unlocking The Learning Potential Of The iPad | Education Greece | Scoop.it

"So the iPad, then.

Pop culture’s plaything and #edtech’s darling.

It’s an app library, a media consumption device, and a mobile learning tool that makes yesterday’s graphing calculators, smartboards, and laptops look like abacuses.

So we buy them then—by the truckloads, in fact. We stamp them as district-owned, give teachers a few PDs that show them some tools and advise them on “district policy,” and then expect miracles.

It is unclear exactly how and where we expect those miracles to show up. Student satisfaction surveys? Learner engagement? Test scores?"

Beth Dichter's curator insight, January 22, 2013 9:41 PM

This post goes on to explore how to "maximize the impact of the iPad as a learning tool" and states that first we must determine the impact we are looking for. The 10 secrets includes:

* Learning has not changed - we still have iPads but we must continue to teach critical thinking, backwards planning, transfer and more.

* Find the overlap - The iPad goes beyond the textbook, not only can the iPad access content but it can also access peers and a larger community.

* Insist on transfer - and with the Common Core this is a crtical component to consider.

Click through to the post to read seven additional suggestions on how to unlock the iPad as a learning tool.
